Lab 2
Lab 2
In this laboratory experiment, you will construct and evaluate the ECG (electrocardiogram)
amplifier by utilizing it on yourself to monitor your heart function. The fundamental ECG
amplifier comprises of three stages, which are illustrated in a separate schematic page. The
initial two stages constitute a three-op-amp instrumentation amplifier, while the final stage is
a band-pass filter. You may refer to section 3.4 on pages 97-100 and section 6.7 on pages
274-275 of the text for further information.
To allow for more time to experiment with the ECG signals, a pre-assembled and tested PCB
with most of the necessary components will be provided. The PCB includes a silkscreen with
reference numbers for the components, which can be found at the end of this manual. Your
task will be to select the final four components (R1, R21, R23, and C22) that will determine
the gain and passband frequencies.
Part1 (PRE-LAB) Design and analyze an ECG amplifier with an overall gain of
approximately 1000 and a passband frequency range from 0.5 Hz to 25 Hz. Ensure that the
gain equation and corner frequency at different stages are clearly presented. It is important to
avoid excessive gain in the first stage, as small offsets from the electrodes or op-amps may
saturate the amplifier. The available components for this design are to be determined. The
components available are:
Capacitors: 10 pF 100pF, 470pF, 1nF, 10nF, 68nF, 0.1uF, 0.33uF, 1uF.
Resistors: 1K, 2.2K, 4.7K, 10K, 22K, 47K, 100K, 1M, 2.2M, 10M
PART 2 Complete the construction of your ECG amplifier and measure its difference mode
gain and common mode gain at various frequencies, including 0.5Hz, 1Hz, 5Hz, 10Hz, 15Hz,
20Hz, 25Hz, 30Hz, 35Hz, 40Hz, and 50Hz. Record and plot your results and include the
passband frequencies in your report along with the common mode rejection ratio (CMRR).
Additionally, measure the noise voltage and provide commentary on how the experimental
setup may affect the value.
PART 3 Record your ECG signals (Lead 1, 2, and 3, as described on page 245 of the text)
using the LabJack data acquisition module at a sampling rate of 100Hz or higher. Determine
the average heart rate (in beats per minute), mean R-wave amplitude (in millivolts), and mean
ST interval (in milliseconds) for each member over a minimum of five heartbeats. Record the
results in a table in your report, including the values of the standard deviations.
SIGNAL PROCESSINGAND ANALYSIS
Analyze the signals by using the statistical methods:
• Plot the waveform of the signals;
• Analyze the frequency characteristics;
• Calculate the auto-correlation function;
• Design a bandpass digital filter to further improve SNR (Hint: Handout 1a)
• Give a detailed explanation of your own ECG signals.
INSTRUMENT SPECIFICATIONS
Write a brief specification of your ECG device (Hint: taking Table 6.1 in textbook as an
example)
GUIDELINE FOR LAB REPOR
For course ELEC 4810, a lab report includes three major parts:
• Objectives of the experiment
It should be pointed out why the experiment needs to be conducted and possible
expected results.
• Experimental methods and setup
In this part, students are supposed to give a detailed description of experimental
methods and procedures. Also, all instruments used in experiment need to be specified
(including manufacturers, model number and etc.)
• Results and analysis
This part is heavily weighted. Data collected in experiment should be presented and
compared with expected or predicted. It will be definitely a plus to analyze and
explain the possible difference between experimental data and expected results or
error between different measurements.
How a report is marked?

Objectives 15%
Methods and setup 25%
Results 25%
