Drought Protocol

This document provides the protocol for conducting on-farm trials of rice varieties under rainfed lowland conditions in drought-prone areas. It outlines steps for site selection, partner farmer selection, seedbed preparation, crop establishment, cultural management, data collection, cropcut harvesting, and farmer managed trials. It also describes how to use a piezometer to measure water table depth.

Direction for Conducting of On-farm Trial Rainfed Lowland for Drought-Prone

Ecosystem

PROTOCOL for RMT

Selection/validation of site

1. Rainfed, no other source of irrigation

2. Tail-end portion of irrigation system where rice crop is frequently subjected to
drought stress at several periods during crop growth
3. Accessible, near or along roads where public conveyances can easily access.

Selection of farmer partner

1. Interested in adopting new technologies.

2. Will cooperate and follow the recommended protocol for the conduct of the trial
3. Has leadership skills and can lead other farmers in adopting new crop
technologies in the area.

Raising seedlings and Seedbed preparation

1. Place seeds in separate bags with labels inside and outside of the bag
2. Prepare labels for seedbed
3. Prepare 1-m wide raised wetbed plots one day before sowing
4. Install seedbed labels as guide during sowing
5. To grow healthy seedlings, sow 100-g seeds per 1-sqm
6. Maintain saturated condition of seedbed until most of the seedlings had fully
germinated
7. Maintain 1-2 cm depth of water for growing seedlings (contributes to ease in puling
of seedlings prior to transplanting)
8. Visit seedbed regularly to check on seedling vigor or for any pest/disease incidence

Crop establishment

1. For transplanted set-up: age of seedlings at TP should not be more than 25

days after sowing

2. RCBD with 3 replications

3. Plot size: Transplanted == 2m x 6m (10 rows x 30 hills)

DSR/ DWSR == 2m x 6m

4. Planting distance (TPR): 20cm x 20cm

5. Number of seedlings/hill: 1 to 2 seedings

6. Prepare plot labels as follows:

Plot number 1 – I – DR 1 Entry code

Replication

7. Seeding rate: Transplanted = 40 kg/ha (150g seed/entry RMT)

DSR/DWSR = 80 kg/ha (300g seed/entry RMT)
Experimental Field Layout

Cultural Management

1. Fertilization: follow provincial quick guides.

2. Other cultural management (weed control, etc) - farmer’s practice
3. Pest/disease: monitor/record any incidence; collect data in case of moderate to
severe cases by using recommended scoring procedure.
4. Record periods of rainfall (agromet data, improvised rain gauge, etc).
5. For sites located in tail-end portion of irrigation system, record periods of
irrigation (date of irrigation, number of days with standing water in the field).
6. If resources permit for fabrication of piezometer, install piezometer and record
daily the water level in the tube.

Data to be Collected

1. Significant dates (sowing, seeding, transplanting, harvest).

2. Early vegetative vigor
3. Date of 50% heading
4. Plant height (in cm, from a sample of 5 hills representative of the plot)
5. Number of panicles/hill (same sample hills as plt height)
6. Weight of harvested grains (from cropcut)
7. Percent moisture content of harvested grains*
8. Yield (kg/ha or t/ha)
9. Maturity
10. Leaf rolling (during occurrence of drought stress)
11. Preference test

Cropcut Harvest

1. Plot size: 2m x 6m = 10 rows x 30 hills

Harvest area = 8.96 sqm
2. To harvest: harvest 8 inner rows x 28 hills leaving one
border row or hill at each end
PROTOCOL for FMT
1. Area = 1000 sqm if farmer has 1-ha rice area; if less than a hectare,
area = 500 sqm per entry
2. Seed requirement: TPR = 2.5 kg
DSR = 5.0 kg
3. Cultural management = farmer’s practice
4. Fertilization = follow provincial quick guide
5. Data to be collected:
Yield, kg/ha or t/ha
Cropcut area = no. of rows x distance bet rows x length of rows
Farmer’s profile
6. no. of entries: 2 – 3 + FV

How to use a piezometer:

1. Drive the piezometer tube into the soil to as much as one meter deep.
2. Remove the soil in the tube with the use of soil auger.
3. Insert a measuring stick in the piezometer tube.
4. Measure the height of the stick from the top up to the soil surface.
5. Remove the stick and measure the length of the stick from the top up to the wet portion
of the inserted stick. The wet portion indicates the depth of the water table.
6. Subtract the height of the stick (measured from step 4) from the total height (measured
from step 5) to get the depth of water table.

*If a piezometer is not available, an ordinary tube with hoes on both ends ca be used.
