Introduction :

Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of Internet & ICT (Information & Communication
Technology). Cyber safety is about to not only keeping information safe and secure, but also
being responsible with that information, being respectful of other people online. As per Cyber
safety people are advised to use good ‘netiquette' (internet etiquettes).

Safely Browsing the Web :

Viruses and malware spread, easily and quickly through websites / web browsing. Through
clicking over the links found on web pages or in email mistakenly our computer may be infected.
An infected computer can run slow, barrage us with pop -ups, download other programs
without our permission, or allow our sensitive personal information to others.

Tips for Safe Web Browsing :


1) Never respond to spam & disclose personal information.
2) Use an antivirus & Firewall-It provide real time malware protection.
3) Create strong passwords.
4) Be sure to review all pre-checked boxes prompted at download & un-check any extra
applications which we don’t want to install.
5) Stay updated - Make sure that your OS, security softwares (Antivirus, Internet security),
browser plug-ins (Java and Adobe products) and other applications are up – to - date.
6) Stay alert if you are doing Online transaction : Check the site is reputed and has refund policy,
check the connection is secure (URL should be a secure format followed by “https”and a
padlock icon will be displayed by the browser.

Identity protection while using the internet :

Identity theft is a type of fraud that involves using someone else identity to steal money or
gain other benefits. It refers to an act of stealing someone’s personal information such as name
login details etc. and then posing as that person online. To be safe from this always use Private
browsing or Anonymous Browsing in internet (By using incognito mode in browser or use any
VPN (Virtual Private Network)).

Way so tracking your Identity :

 IP ADDRESS : It is a unique address of your device when you connect to the internet.
When you share your IP on network other devices or a website can determine your
geographical location.

 COOKIES AND TRACKING SCRIPTS : Cookies are small text files - bits of information - left on
your computer by websites you have visited which let them ‘remember’ things about you.
They can identify you and track your browser activity.
Cookies are two types : First Party Cookies which store your ID, Password and auto fill the
information. Third Party Cookies will store your browsing history so that they can place
advertisement according to our interest.

 HTTP REFERRER : The HTTP referrer is a header field that identifies the address of the
webpage (i.e. the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) or Internationalized Resource
Identifier (IRI)) which is linked to the resource being requested. By checking the referrer,
the new webpage can see where the request originated.

 SUPER COOKIES : These are persistent cookies i.e., they come back even after being deleted.
They store cookie data in multiple places.

 USER AGENT : Your browser will always send a user agent every time when you connect to
a website. It tells website about the browser and type of OS, providing another piece of
data that can be stored and target the ads.

Confidentiality of Information :
Allows authorized users to access sensitive and secured data. Maintains the Confidentiality of
Information.
Tips to Protect Information Confidential :
 Build strong passwords
 Using Firewall whenever possible.
 Private Browsing & Safe Browsing.
 Encryption : Use https based sites, as HTTPs ensures data security over the network - mainly
public networks like Wi-Fi. HTTP is not encrypted and is vulnerable to attackers.
 Avoid using public Wi-Fi and public computer.

Social Networks :

Social networking sites is a web application or online platform where people can setup their
public profile and make connections with other online people called online friends.
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Digg, Ning, Meetup etc. are the number of social
networking sites and tools is exploding nowadays.

Tips to stay safe on social media :

 Use a strong password


 Use a different password for each social media
 Password protect your devices if using social media apps
 Be selective with friend requests
 Be careful while sharing something
 Become familiar with the privacy policies of the social media sites
 Install antivirus
 Log off when done
 Create a smaller social network

Problems to Avoid :

 Cyber Trolling : Derogatory messages or comments posted online targeting people


are called cyber trolls.
 Cyber Bullying : Harassing, demeaning, embarrassing, defaming or
intimidating someone using modern technologies like internet,
cell phones, instant messages, social networks, etc., is called
Cyber Bullying.
 Cyber Stalking : This is a kind of online harassment wherein the victim is subjected
to a barrage of online messages and emails.
 Stranger Danger : Children’s are advised to not to interact with strangers on
social networks as there are chances that many people on
social media are not who they say they are.
 Digital Footprint : Digital footprints are the records and traces individuals leave
behind as they use the internet. Digital footprints are
permanently stored.

Common usage rules of social networking sites :


 Don’t be rude or abusive
 Don’t spread rumors
 You are what you write / tweet
 Face your problems, don’t Post / Facebook your problems.
 Don’t take it too seriously.
 Don’t use fake name.
 Protect your identity.
 Respect other’s sentiments.
 Don’t fight online.
 Monitor comments.

Cyber Crimes :

It is a crime in which a computer (any electronic gadgets)is the object of the crime (hacking,
phishing, spamming) or is used as a tool to commit an offence (child pornography, hate
crimes) and involving in communications or information systemsthrough internet is
referred to as cyber - crime.

Some common cyber crimes are :

Cyberbullying : Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones,
computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in social
media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Purpose – to
get revenge, to harass & threat, to humiliate.

Cyber trolling : is internet slang for a person who intentionally starts arguments or
upsetsothers by posting inflammatory remarks. The sole purpose of trolling is
angering people.
Purpose – to entertain, to argument, to upset victim, to get attention.

Cyber Stalking : Cyber stalking is defined as the unlawful act of harassing a person or collecting
an individual’s private information using electronic network.
