MTH 101:Introductory Mathematics I (3 Credits)The objective of this course is
toreinforce, deepen and extend the mathematical understanding of students,develop
their mathematical problem-solving skills, and to prepare them for moreadvanced
mathematical courses such as linear Algebra later on in the program. Key topics
for this course include: Theset R of real numbers. Relation of order in R,
Irrational numbers (surds),Binary Operations on sets, Indices and Logarithms.
Functions and mappings:Definition of a function, Linear, Quadratic and other
polynomial functions.Graphical representation of functions, Inequalities in one/two
variables,Sequences and Series (intuitive treatment of limits), The Binomial
Theorem, theBinomial Series, Circular Measure, Complex numbers. Matrices and
Determinants.The Principles of Mathematical induction— the notations:>, <, =,
<=,etc. applied to not more than two statements at a time, equivalent statement.Set
Theory—basic operations on sets and Venn diagrams. Probability experiments—
samplespaces and events, Relative Frequency, interpretation of probability, laws
ofprobability, conditional probability and statistical independence. Permutationand
Combinations. Random variables and probability computation, Bivariaterandom
variables and their distributions, Marginal and conditionaldistributions.The mode
