31. The electromagnetic spectrum consists of different wavelengths and frequencies that can be both beneficial
and harmful for us. We can infer that the regions of the electromagnetic spectrum are safe at a low level.
Those with higher frequency should only be used when it is necessary and at the right amount.
Overexposure to the EM spectrum can still pose a threat to our human health (disturbances in pacemaker,
formation of cataracts, eye damage, skin burns, etc.) There is a saying that too much of something is
harmful and it works the same way with the EM spectrum.

31. The electromagnetic spectrum can either be useful or harmful depending on the intensity and amount. A
sufficient amount of any EM can be utilized properly as the energy it provides can be bearable depending on
what object receives. The only things that cause absolute harm in the spectrum are the cosmic or gamma
rays as their energy and frequency is far beyond human usage.
V. Problem Solving
32.
Given: 380 nm
Required: Energy: ?
Equation: Conversion 380nm x 1 m/1.0x10^9 nm; E=hf
Solution:
380nm x 1 m/1.0x10^9 nm = 3.8x10^-7 m
f = c/lambda = 3.0x10^8 m/s / 3.8x10^-7 = 7.89x10^14
E = hf = (6.63x10^-34 J/s)(7.89x10^14) = 5.23 x 10^-19
Answer: 5.23x10^19 J
33.
Given: f = 16cm
Required: Image orientation, nature, size
Equation: multiplication
Solution:
C = 16(2) = 32 cm
The object is placed beyond C; beyond the curvature.
34.
Given: c = -24cm = f = -12; ho = 6cm; do = 6cm
Required: Height of the image, magnification
Equation: 1/f = 1/do + 1/di (mirror equation); m = hi/ho = -di/do
Solution:
1/-12 = 1/6 + 1/di
12di (1/-12 = 1/6 + 1/di) 12di
- di = 2di + 12
-3di = 12
di = -4cm (virtual image)
hi/ho = -di/do = hi/8 = 4/6
6hi/32 = hi = 5.3
m = 5.⅜
m = .6
M < 1; .6 < 1
The image is upright and taller.
35.
Given: do = 8 cm; di = 24 cm
Required: f and image characteristics
Equation: 1/f = 1/do + 1/di and m = hi/ho = -di/do
Solution: 1/f = 1/8 + 1/24 = 0.167
= 1/0.167 = 6cm
M = 24/8 = 3 cm
Answer: The focal length is 6cm and the image is smaller than the object.
