Consent Form For Parents

The document is a parental permission form for a study on using argument-driven inquiry to improve biology students' conceptual understanding and science skills. It describes the purpose of improving their higher-order thinking abilities through experimentation. It details that students from two 10th grade biology classes will participate in laboratory investigations and argument-driven inquiry lessons over four weeks, which will be part of their regular curriculum. It outlines the minimal risks and safeguards to ensure confidentiality and voluntary participation.

Parental Permission for a Minor to Participate in Research

Using Argument-Driven Inquiry To Improve Conceptual Understanding and Science Process Skills in Biology

I. INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE

The researchers, Jose Miguel Azul, Pauline Faith Bernate, Sophia Mari Siozon, Danielle Angela Taccad and Bianca

Mae Tapat are undergraduate students at University of Santo Tomas College of Education and are conducting a

research study about using argument-driven inquiry to improve conceptual understanding and science process skills

in biology. We are inviting your child to take part in the research as a way of improving their conceptual

understanding in the concepts of Biology and to hone their science process skills inside the classroom and the

laboratory.

II. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Your child will potentially benefit from developing higher-order thinking skills, especially in inquisitive laboratory

activities. They can organize variables appropriate for research, plan the experimental procedure, decide the best

way to interpret findings, and draw activity. Through experimentation, students can provide scientific argumentation

from the answers to several general research questions given.

Improving conceptual understanding of students may promote retention of lessons in Biology. It will also allow

students’ to grasp new ideas in science for deeper understanding of concepts in science. Improving science process

skills on students gains understanding when engaged in scientific investigation. Improving the basic skills of

students will enable them to organize and classify new ideas in science. As students obtain these basic skills,

students can improve their integrated skills which allows them to make inferences, hypotheses, and to conduct

experiments. Students can also develop a sense of responsibility for their own learning, improved problem solving

and critical thinking skills which they may use in their higher education

III. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

The number of research participants will depend on the number of parents who will sign the consent form and will

allow their child to participate and take part in the study. Eighty-seven (87) students from the two Grade 10 sections

of the Educational High School (EHS) at the University of Santo Tomas are expected to take part in this study.
IV. PROCEDURE FOR STUDY

If you agree to let your child participate in this research study, the following will occur:

● As part of their science subject, the child will be asked to perform laboratory investigation about Central

Dogma for four (4) consecutive weeks.

● Argumentative Driven Inquiry will serve as an intervention to improve the students conceptual

understanding and science process skills. Argumentative-Driven Inquiry is separated into 7 stages,

specifically (1) Commencement wherein the teacher will introduce the major concept of the topic, (2)

Collection where students are given an opportunity to understand the informative investigation, and use

appropriate data collection or analysis techniques, (3) Construction where students will construct their

tentative argument based on the investigation question, (4) Collaboration or the argumentation session of

the groups, (5) Creation where the students begin to write their investigation report., (6) Conflict Critique

or the double-blind peer review wherein students are provided with feedback they require in order to

improve, and (7) Completion where the comments and recommendations are revised.

● This study will take place in their regular classroom and laboratory as part of our scheduled curriculum.

● Your child will participate in face-to-face and online science class sessions. The science session during the

face-to-face and online session will take place from 7:00 AM to 8:15 AM. These class schedules are the

same ones provided by the UST EHS office.

V. RISKS AND INCONVENIENCES

This is considered to be a minimal risk study, meaning that the risk to your child is not greater than the ordinarily

encountered in daily life activities. The primary risk for this study is that your child may feel anxious, stressed or

any distressful feelings in completing the some tools/tests, such as pre- and post tests, mental models, laboratory

investigation reports and reflection logs. However, take note that these tools/tasks are integrated seamlessly in

classroom teaching. Your child may answer only those questions he or she wants to, or he or she may stop the entire

process at any time, without penalty. Your child may not get any compensation from participating in the study, but

the laboratory activities we will give your child may benefit him/her in deepening their conceptual understanding

and improving their science process skills in a laboratory setting.

VI. SAFEGUARDS

Data collection will happen for 4 weeks, and will be collected at different time frames. Data will be collected before

starting the intervention, and after the intervention. This will help the researchers in assessing the level of students’

science process skills and conceptual understanding before and after the intervention. The data collected will only be

used throughout the duration of the study and will be kept in a locked cabinet by the head researcher. After the study,

it will be shredded and recycled. No data collected will be tossed in the trash bin. The data record placed into a secure

software application and computer harddrives will be erased using a commercial software application that is designed

to erase all data from the device or even reformatting the computer to ensure proper data disposal. There are no fees

or costs that your children will shoulder. All expenses for the laboratory investigation activities will be shouldered by

the researchers. Since the participants of this study and the data that would be collected will be based on minors, a

parental consent form will be provided explaining the purpose of the study, its procedures, scope and limitations, and

protocol for withdrawal in the participation of the study. The researchers considered all possible sources of harm to

the participants. May it be psychological, social, physical or legal harm, the participants are provided with resources

or counseling or medical services if needed.

VII. CONFIDENTIALITY

The researcher will make sure that all data supplied by the participants is kept private. To protect their privacy, the

researchers will let the participants know about this matter before collecting any data. Additionally, before

proceeding, the researchers will get the parents’ participants permission.

VIII. VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION

You have been given a copy of this consent form to keep. PARTICIPATION IN THIS RESEARCH STUDY IS

VOLUNTARY. You are free to decline to have your child participate in this research study. You may withdraw your

child's participation at any point without penalty. Your decision whether or not to participate in this research study

will have no influence on your or your child's present or future status at your university.

____YES. I allow my son/daughter to be in the study. ____NO. I don’t want my son/daughter to be in the
study.
