Tutorial 5 Proposed IoT Project GP B-8

This document proposes developing a smart bus mobile application called Smart Bus Co. for students at UiTM Jasin. Currently, students access bus schedules through PDFs shared over messaging apps. The proposed application would allow students to view schedules, track bus locations in real-time, estimate arrival times, check seat availability, and pay fares using their student cards. Developing a mobile app was selected over a web application due to lower risk. The goal is to improve transportation access and efficiency for students.

1 Executive Summary
Our company, Smart Bus Co., is going to propose a project to make it easier for UiTM Jasin
students who use the bus provided by the university. Currently, students have a problem
accessing the bus schedule since the bus schedule is only given in pdf form on WhatsApp
and telegram.

The goal of this project is to provide an effective way to disseminate the bus
schedule and all of the information related to the bus. Therefore, it provided the bus
schedule, bus number, and real-time location of buses where students can estimate bus
arrival time, a student can make payment, and the availability of the seat.

Our project's MOV will contain features or areas like client (students), financial
(income from application use), and operational (the effectiveness of application and
maintenance). Our goal to provide an effective way to disseminate the bus schedule will be
met if this MOV is completed with a large number of students utilizing this application
within a specific time frame.

To decide on how we should solve the problem mentioned above we have listed two
alternatives. The first alternative is to develop a smart bus mobile application. It will need
the student to download the smart bus application on their smartphone before it can be used.
The second alternative is to develop a web application where students can use their search
engine without needing to download the application.

Based on the comparison between the two alternatives, our company proposes to do
alternatives 1 which is to develop an application for student Uitm Jasin. It is because the
risk of developing an application is low compared to alternatives 2.

2 Introduction

2.1 Background
Smart Bus provides a platform to disseminate bus schedules and the live location of the
bus throughout UiTM Jasin. Smart bus combines IOT to allow users to get satisfaction
when using these applications. Our vision is to provide the best services for public
transportation, especially for Uitm Jasin, and focus on expanding our project for all Uitm
in Malaysia. Our mission is to offer a wide and comprehensive bus operations system to
make sure users, especially students, can connect with the bus. For the time being, our
target market is UiTM Jasin’s students, especially non-residents that stay around
Merlimau, Kampung Seri Mendapat, and Jasin Bestari. The stakeholders of this project
are the UiTM Jasin organization, students, and also bus drivers.

2.2 Current situation

The current situation of our project is students of UiTM Jasin can only access the bus
schedule in a pdf that is shared with a Telegram or Whatsapp group. The majority of
students did not have transportation and had to rely on the bus.

2.3 Description of problem or opportunity

The problems that happened are:

• Students do not know whether the bus is still operating or not.

• Students also do not get a proper schedule from the Uitm that they can trust.
• Students do not know whether the bus they are waiting for is full or not.
• Students do not have the cash to make payments.

2.4 Opportunity or Proposed solution

The proposed solution is to develop a smart bus application that enables students to
view the bus schedule. It will display the bus number, bus routes, and bus timing. The
smart bus application also lets the students trace the real-time location of the bus by
using a GPS tracking system. It is easier for students to estimate the arrival time of the
bus. It also provides a feature where students can check the current number of
passengers on the bus. The student will make a payment every time they ride the bus
using their student card.

2.5 Project’s measurable organizational value

2.5.1 Desire area of impact

Customer To develop a new service by offering a smart bus application that

connects students who want to ride the bus and view the bus schedule.

Financial By providing a schedule and bus live location through the smart bus
application more students will use the bus then the revenue will be
increased.

Operational The process to disseminate the bus schedule will be more efficient and
more effective with the help of smart bus applications.

2.5.2 Project Desire Value

This product will concentrate on increasing effectiveness because it will give better
service to the student. Due to this effective process, more students are taking the bus.
By using this application, students that use buses will receive better customer service
because it provides stable bus schedule information.

2.5.3 Appropriate Metric

This project will be successful if we have at least 8000 new students install the
application and use it 2 times a day.

2.5.4 Time frame

We aim to achieve at least in 1 year 8000 new students installing the application and
using it 2 times a day.

Time Period MOV

1 day 200 new students install the application and use it 2 times a
day.

1 month 400 new students install the application and use it 2 times a
day.

1 year 8000 new students install the application and use it 2 times a
day.

2.5.5 How achieving the project’s MOV will support the organization’s goal and
strategy
Our project's purpose is to create an efficient method of disseminating the bus schedule.
As a result, our solution enables the student to see the bus's current location. Then, our
project's MOV will contain features or areas like client (students), financial (income
from application use), and operational (the effectiveness of application and
maintenance). Our goal will be met if this MOV is completed with a large number of
students utilizing this application within a specific time frame. All of this will be backed
by our achievement of the project objectives, which are to design a smart bus application
using IoT technology and to integrate GPS technology with the internet of things to
improve the bus user experience.
2.6 Objectives of writing this business case

1. To obtain financial approval to commence this project and proceed to the next
stage.
2. To compare alternative solutions.
3. To develop a smart bus application using IoT technology.
4. To provide GPS technology with the internet of things to enhance the user
experience using the bus.

3 Alternative

3.1 Alternative 1
Alternative 1 is considered creating a mobile application that allows students to use it
easily. Students need to download the application first before they can use its features.
This application allows the student to view the bus schedule and the real-time location of
buses. Students also can estimate bus arrival time to make sure students do not miss the
bus or wait for the bus for a long time. This application also makes it easier for students
to pay bus fares since students do not need to use cash to pay. This application will link
to their student card to enable students to pay the fare. Besides, this application will
display the availability of the seat for each bus.

3.2 Alternative 2
Alternative 2 is a web-based application where students just need to use their search
engine to search the website provided to them. They do not have to download any
application on their smartphone. The web-based application needs the students to sign up
or create an account before they can use all of the functionalities. It provides the schedule
of the bus and all of the relevant information about the bus such as bus number, bus routes,
and bus real-time location. The systems also provide a smart function which is GPS where
students can determine the location of the bus and be prepared on where and when they
will need to go to the bus stop. The other function is that students can also know the
number of passengers on the bus.

4 Analysis Of Alternative
4.1 Methodology of how alternatives will be analyzed

The data collection methods that we use are surveys and questionnaires. We obtain data
from targeted respondents which are the UiTM Jasin’s students. Since online surveys can
be accessed anytime and anywhere, we created a google form for the students to answer.
Next, an interview is a conversation that flows and is open-ended. Interviews, as opposed
to other methods, give interviewers the chance to inquire more about the topic. We will
conduct interviews with a couple of students that are having difficulties with the current
situation. An interview enables us to know about a person's other problems in addition to
gathering confidential info about them.

risk and assumption
