Chapter 3 and 4

This document provides instructions for solving problems using Macaulay's method, Castigliano's theorem, the conjugate beam method, and the moment area theorem to analyze beams and frames. It includes calculating deflections, slopes, and rotations at various points for beams that have different loading and support conditions, such as concentrated loads, uniform distributed loads, and overhangs.

MACAULAY’S METHOD

1. Find the maximum slope and deflection for a simply supported beam
with a concentrated load in the span.
2. A beam AB of 4m span beam is simply supported at the ends and is
loaded as shown in figure. Determine by macaulay’s method:
a. Deflection at C
b. Max. deflection
c. Slope at end A, E=200 X 106 kN/m2, I= 20 X 10=6m4

3. Calculate the deflection under C and D using macaulay’s method. E=2.1 X

104 kN/cm2, I= 16 X 103 cm4

4. A simply supported beam of span 6m with an overhang of length 2m on

both sides is loaded at 1m from the free ends with a concentrated load
of 20kN each, besides udl of 5kN/m in the middle third of the span.
Calculate the deflection of mid span using macaulay’s method.
CASTIGLIANO’S THEOREM
5. Calculate the rotation at free end of the cantilever beam having udl of
3kN/m in the span of 5m.
6. Find the slope at A in the given beam by Castigliano’s method.

7. Determine the horizontal and vertical deflection at the free end D in the
frame shown in figure:

CONJUGATE BEAM METHOD AND MOMENT AREA THEOREM

1. Determine the rotation and deflection of the free end of the cantilever beam
subjected to udl over an entire span using moment area theorem.
2. Determine the slope at A, deflection at C and mid span E in the following beam
using moment area theorem.

3. Determine the rotation and deflection of the quarter point of the simply
supported beam subjected to udl over an entire span using conjugate beam
mathod.
