Mammography Sas 8

The document provides information about mammography and breast cancer. It discusses (1) the etiology and epidemiology of breast cancer, noting that it is the most common cancer in women and risk increases with age. It also discusses (2) various risk factors for breast cancer including genetic/family history, reproductive history, lifestyle factors like alcohol consumption, and uncertain factors like diet and medication. The document aims to increase awareness and knowledge of breast cancer for students.

Substantial support for breast cancer awareness and research funding has helped created
advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Breast cancer survival rates have increased,
and the number of deaths associated with this disease is steadily declining, largely due to factors such
as earlier detection, a new personalized approach to treatment and a better understanding of the
disease.

HOW COMMON IS BREAST CANCER?

• the commonest invasive malignancy in females worldwide, with incidence rates being higher in
Western Europe and lowest in Middle and Eastern Africa.

LIFE TIME RISK (FEMALE)

refers to the chance a person has of developing or dying from cancer over the course of his or her
lifetime (from birth to death)

Risk factor of breast cancer

Unchangeable risk factors

gender (being female is the main risk)
age (the older the woman, the higher the risk

Genetic risk factors

family history (hereditary)
personal history of breast cancer
breast density (greater density, the greater chance of cancer development)
socio-economic status (higher in developed countries, from developing countries)

Reproductive Factors That Influence Breast Cancer Risk

• MENSTRUAL PEROID
• Early age at menarche (before age 12) and and/or late menopause (after age 55) infer
a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.
• The increase in risk may be due to a longer lifetime exposure to the hormones
estrogen and progesterone.

PARITY (Childbearing reduces the risk of breast cancer)

• EXOGENOUS HORMONES
• ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES/PILLS
Slightly greater risk of breast cancer than non-users, but the risk diminishes over time
after stopping use.
• PREVIOUS BENIGN BREAST DISEASE

• MEDICAL RADIATION EXPOSURE

• LIFESTYLE RELATED RISK FACTOR
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
exercise can reduce an individual’s breast cancer risk.
ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
Relative risk increasing with the increasing amount of alcohol consumed.

UNCEERTAIN RISK FACTOR

DIET
Higher intakes of saturated fat appear to correlate with an increased risk
SMOKING AND PASSIVE SMOKE
NIGHT SHIFT/WORK
shorter duration sleep patterns, higher risk of developing breast cancer
MEDICATION/ MEDICAL CONDITIONS
reducing breast cancer risk, mainly aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Check for Understanding

You will identify the correct of the following question. This will be recorded as your quiz.
Superimpositions or erasures in you answer/ratio is not allowed. You are given 25 minutes for this
activity.

Multiple Choice:

(For 1-10 items, please refer to the questions in the Rationalization Activity)

RATIONALIZATION ACTIVITY (DURING THE FACE TO FACE INTERACTION WITH THE STUDENTS)
The instructor will now rationalize the answers to the students and will encourage them to ask questions and to discuss
among their classmates for 20 minutes.

C. LESSON WRAP-UP

After the instructor give a brief overview on A etiology and Epidemiology of Breast Cancer, it`s time to
assess the student`s understanding through answering the following questions:

1. What is the etiology of breast cancer?

2. What are the common risk factor of breast cancer?

3. Why it is important to have knowledge on breast cancer?

ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR TEACHERS

LESSON WRAP-UP (5 minutes)

Teacher directs the student to mark (encircle) their place in the work tracker which is simply a visual
to help students track how much work they have accomplished and how much work there is left to do.
This tracker will be part of the student activity sheet.

You are done with the session! Let’s track your progress.
