Experiment No 8 - Density of Given Sample of Water
Experiment No 8 - Density of Given Sample of Water
Apparatus:
Pycnometer
Weighing balance
Measuring cylinder
Principle:
Density is defined as the ratio of mass per unit volume. It is the quantity of mass that is contained
by the one unit of volume of any substance. It is a physical property that can be measured
without changing the chemical identity of a substance. Since pure substances have unique
density values, measuring the density of a substance can help identify the purity of that
substance.
Procedure:
Take dry and clean apparatus. First of all weigh an empty pycnometer. Now wash it properly
with the solvent of which density we want to calculate. Now fill the pycnometer with given
sample of water, place the cap and clean it. Weigh the pycnometer filled with water. Find the
weight of water. Now pour all of the water into the graduated cylinder. Find the capacity of
pycnometer if volume of pycnometer is not mentioned over it. Finally calculate the density of
water with the help of following formula.

1. What is Density?
Density is defined as the ratio of mass per unit volume.
2. What is the equation for density?
Density=Mass/Volume
3. What is the density of water?
1 g/ml
4. Name instrument used to measure density?
Pycnometer
5. What is the composition of Pycnometer?
Pycnometer bottles are usually made of glass and have a ground glass stopper with a
capillary tube for air bubbles to escape.
6. Do all objects have the same density?
No
7. What happens if you mix two liquids with different densities?
The liquid with the lower density will settle on top of the liquid with the higher density.
8. What is density of ice?
0.93 g/cm3
