Environmental Engineering and Disaster Management

[Introduction: Objective, Scope, Outcome of the course]

INTRODUCTION:
Environment: The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates
is known as Environment. “Environ” means “to surround,” or “to encircle.”The components of
environment are abiotic and biotic. Abiotic components are Lithosphere, Hydrosphere and
Atmosphere. Biotic components are Plants, Animals and Microorganisms.
Humans are impacting the physical environment in many ways such as overpopulation, pollution,
burning fossil fuels, and deforestation. Changes like these have triggered climate change, soil
erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable water etc. Fertilizers , pesticides used in agriculture
Industrial effulants have also been polluting our environment. So there is need to take action and
educate the people about the environmental problems and to find out the solutions to prevent
further rises in pollution rates and manmade disasters.
Environmental engineering: Environmental Engineering is a professional engineering discipline
that takes from broad scientific topics like chemistry, biology, ecology, geology, hydraulics,
hydrology, microbiology, and mathematics to create solutions that will protect and also improve
the health of living organisms and improve the quality of the environment. In other way
Environmental Engineering is the application of scientific and engineering principles to improve
and maintain the environment to protect human health, protect nature's beneficial ecosystems
and improve environmental-related enhancement of the quality of human life.
Disaster Management: Disaster management refers to the policies, programs, administrative
actions and operations undertaken to address a natural or man-made disaster through
preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. Although the actions taken to address a
specific disaster vary depending on the hazard four objectives of disaster management apply to
every situation.

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE:

• To develop environmental scientists and engineers and sensitize them towards

environmental issues.
• To acquire analytical skills in assessing environmental impacts through a multidisciplinary
approach.
• Demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary nature of environmental and health risk
assessment.
• Make aware of professionalism, ethics, and environmental laws and regulations.
• To identify environmental problems and solutions through organized research.
• To understand different environmental pollution such as Soil, Air, Water pollution etc.
and their preventions.
• To understand the adverse impact of abiotic factors like light, radiations and heat etc.
• To find out the solutions for wastewater management, water, air, soil pollution control,
recycling, waste disposal and public health etc.
• To design municipal water supply and industrial waste water recycling systems.
• To build skills to quantitative and qualitative assessment of water requirement.
• To evaluate the water balance within a watershed and determine the available water
supply, the water needed for various needs in that watershed, the seasonal cycles of
water movement through the watershed and they develop systems to store, treat, and
convey water for various uses for example rain water system.
• To provide adequate water pressure and flow rates to meet various end-user needs such
as domestic use, fire suppression, and irrigation.
• To design plans to prevent waterborne disease and improve sanitation in urban, rural and
recreational areas.
• To study the effect of technological advances on the environment, addressing local and
worldwide environmental issues such as acid rain, global warming ozone layer depletion,
water and air pollution from automobile exhaust and industrial resources.
• Electronic or electrical engineers capable of developing devices and artifacts able to
monitor, measure, model and control environmental impact, including monitoring and
managing energy generation from renewable sources.
• To protect and improve air, water, and overall environmental quality in order to avoid
or mitigate the consequences of harmful effects.

• The objective of disaster management comprises six elements: the pre-disaster phase
includes prevention, mitigation and preparedness, while the post disaster phase includes
response, rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery.
• To reduce the risk of disasters caused by human error, deliberate destruction, and
building or equipment failures.
• Electrical engineer make the electric system that resist any disaster and make sure
smooth supply of electricity without any disruption, this is also a big part in disaster
managements.
• Electrical engineers can make drowns and helicopters to supply food and water and can
make JCB machines to pull out the heavy stuff to save people who were downside of it.
• Power control during heavy rainfall resulting floods and prevention of shocks with water
being a good conductor of electricity is ensured by the electricians by timely cutting off
the electricity supply.
• They also make sure secure earthing pits during the electrical installation which could be
a major problem at the time of earthquake if not done right.
• Electrical motors and generator installation in drought-prone areas are done by electrical
engineers who eradicate the further drying up of the region and provide the water supply
for the victims.
• Make aware of professional development, life-long learning, and current global and
contemporary issues in environmental and health risk assessment.
• To train the students on developing practical, efficient and cost effective solutions on
problems and challenges on environmental engineering and disaster management.

SCOPE OF COURSE:

• Environmental Engineering Science is an awareness spread among people to conserve

and protect the environment.
• Environmental sciences teach an individual to utilize the natural resources adequately
without degrading environment.
• It also provides information about Sustainable Development.
• Environmental studies are a multidisciplinary approach deals with every issue that affects
a living organism.
• Disaster management covers a much broader scope, and many modern disaster
management Engineers may find themselves far more involved in pre-disaster activities
than in post-disaster response.
• Disaster Management engineers resources and all the possible responsibilities for dealing
with natural calamities and conserves people’s life. Natural Disasters such as floods,
tsunamis and earthquakes can have a major impact on human health immediately.
• Careers in disaster management are usually government jobs, jobs with emergency
services, law enforcement, local authorities, relief agencies, non-governmental
organizations. Private sector careers are also available while fulfilling their corporate
social responsibilities.
• The study of this course generates awareness about various causes of environmental
pollution and disasters so that preventive measures can be used.

OUTCOME OF COURSE:
• Ability to understand the various types of natural resources and problems due to over
exploitation.

• Ability to understand various factors which cause environmental pollution and their
control measures.

• Ability to understand various hazards & disasters, their affects and mitigation measures.

• Provides broad knowledge of solid waste management systems

• Convey a clear idea of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental and health risk
assessment.

• The ability to apply the fundamental knowledge of science and engineering to assess
environmental and hazard risk.

• Ability to use different tools (computer tools and statistics) to aid the assessment
processes.

• Understand what is life-time learning and how does it contribute to advancements of

career.

• Ability to understand environmental laws and regulations to develop guidelines,

procedures and processes for health and safety issues.

• Understand what professional ethics are and how do ethics affect the outcomes of
environmental laws and regulations.

• To acquire analytical skills in assessing environmental impacts through a multidisciplinary

approach. Iii. To identify environmental problems and solutions through organized
research. Iv. To improve the communication and writing skill so as to face the competitive
world
