Unit-1Environmental Engineering EE Final Year
Unit-1Environmental Engineering EE Final Year
INTRODUCTION:
Environment: The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates
is known as Environment. “Environ” means “to surround,” or “to encircle.”The components of
environment are abiotic and biotic. Abiotic components are Lithosphere, Hydrosphere and
Atmosphere. Biotic components are Plants, Animals and Microorganisms.
Humans are impacting the physical environment in many ways such as overpopulation, pollution,
burning fossil fuels, and deforestation. Changes like these have triggered climate change, soil
erosion, poor air quality, and undrinkable water etc. Fertilizers , pesticides used in agriculture
Industrial effulants have also been polluting our environment. So there is need to take action and
educate the people about the environmental problems and to find out the solutions to prevent
further rises in pollution rates and manmade disasters.
Environmental engineering: Environmental Engineering is a professional engineering discipline
that takes from broad scientific topics like chemistry, biology, ecology, geology, hydraulics,
hydrology, microbiology, and mathematics to create solutions that will protect and also improve
the health of living organisms and improve the quality of the environment. In other way
Environmental Engineering is the application of scientific and engineering principles to improve
and maintain the environment to protect human health, protect nature's beneficial ecosystems
and improve environmental-related enhancement of the quality of human life.
Disaster Management: Disaster management refers to the policies, programs, administrative
actions and operations undertaken to address a natural or man-made disaster through
preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. Although the actions taken to address a
specific disaster vary depending on the hazard four objectives of disaster management apply to
every situation.
• The objective of disaster management comprises six elements: the pre-disaster phase
includes prevention, mitigation and preparedness, while the post disaster phase includes
response, rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery.
• To reduce the risk of disasters caused by human error, deliberate destruction, and
building or equipment failures.
• Electrical engineer make the electric system that resist any disaster and make sure
smooth supply of electricity without any disruption, this is also a big part in disaster
managements.
• Electrical engineers can make drowns and helicopters to supply food and water and can
make JCB machines to pull out the heavy stuff to save people who were downside of it.
• Power control during heavy rainfall resulting floods and prevention of shocks with water
being a good conductor of electricity is ensured by the electricians by timely cutting off
the electricity supply.
• They also make sure secure earthing pits during the electrical installation which could be
a major problem at the time of earthquake if not done right.
• Electrical motors and generator installation in drought-prone areas are done by electrical
engineers who eradicate the further drying up of the region and provide the water supply
for the victims.
• Make aware of professional development, life-long learning, and current global and
contemporary issues in environmental and health risk assessment.
• To train the students on developing practical, efficient and cost effective solutions on
problems and challenges on environmental engineering and disaster management.
SCOPE OF COURSE:
OUTCOME OF COURSE:
• Ability to understand the various types of natural resources and problems due to over
exploitation.
• Ability to understand various factors which cause environmental pollution and their
control measures.
• Ability to understand various hazards & disasters, their affects and mitigation measures.
• Convey a clear idea of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental and health risk
assessment.
• The ability to apply the fundamental knowledge of science and engineering to assess
environmental and hazard risk.
• Ability to use different tools (computer tools and statistics) to aid the assessment
processes.
• Understand what professional ethics are and how do ethics affect the outcomes of
environmental laws and regulations.
