Project

This project involves designing a position control system to control the position of an antenna on a roof using tools in a laboratory. A group of 4 students are supervised by Eng Adham Abu-shamla on this project dated July 6, 2014. The purpose is to have the azimuth angle output follow the input angle command using a potentiometer to convert the angular displacement to a voltage. The system operates to drive the error to zero when the input and output match. The circuit diagram and components used are described. Motor drivers in the form of an H-bridge circuit are used to allow a DC motor to run in both directions. A photo of the completed project is also included.

Project Describtion
Control the position of the antenna on the roof
using the tools in the lab of control
Design concept
A position control system converts a
position input command to a position
output response. Position control finds
widespread applications in antennas,
robot arms, and computer disk drives.
The purpose of this system is to have the
azimuth angle output follow the input
angle. The input command is an angular
displacement. The potentiometer converts
the angular displacement into a voltage.
Similarly, the output angular
displacement is converted to a voltage by
the potentiometer in the feedback path.
The signal and power amplifiers boost the
difference between the input and output
voltages. This amplified actuating signal
drives the plant.
The system operates to drive the error to
zero when the input and the
output match, the error will be zero and
the motor will not run .

Motor Drivers:
Motor drivers are essentially power amplifiers; their function is to
take a low-current control signal, and turn it into a proportionally
higher-current signal that can drive a motor. Note here that the
control signal is likely on the order of 10 mA, and the motor may
require 100's of mA to make it turn. An example of a motor driver
is an H-Bridge.
An H-bridge is an electronic circuit which enables a voltage to be
applied across a load in either direction. These circuits are often
used in robotics and other applications to allow DC motors to run
forwards and backwards. H-bridges are available as integrated
circuits, or can be built from discrete components.
