TYPES OF MEDIA

Generally speaking, media, or medium in singular form, refers to the

channels and means of communication by which information is transmitted
between the Sender and Receiver. In mass communication, common examples
of media include newspapers, dramatically and has been expanded. It can now
mean different things to different people. Before, media is simply
communicating via television, print, and radio. The idea or content could be in
the form of videos, print, or audio, it could also be fiction or non fiction.

But with the rise of the internet media can now also refer to the
information or message itself. All content can be media. The posts and
comments in Facebook, the videos played in YouTube, and even the
information on a blog—these are all content and therefore, also called as
media.

Today, advertising keeps on evolving that the between content and

advertising is becoming thinner. Media can also now refer to the medium or
channels where ads and any promotional contents are placed. It could be a
movie, TV, Radio, or any web page with online ad space.

Before, media only refers to people who write or publish news. But
today, people also use the term “Media” to talk about any news outlet. The
Journalists, Reporters, and other people related to press, we’re once the
source of latest news and happenings. However now, most of the people learn
about them through the people learn about the through the people from social
media. Therefore, media is now also used to refer to the sender or people who
bring or share any information.

In this modern era of digital, technology, wherein people gain more

access to information, media can now refer to the message, the medium, or
the Sender.
5.1 Print Media

Any materials that disseminate information and are physically printed on

paper is referred to as Print Media. Newspapers, magazines, flyers, and
academic journals are all examples of this type of media. Printed materials that
were created before the invention and widespread use of printing presses had
to be written by hand.

5.1.1 Types of Printing

1. Relief Printmaking — By applying ink to wood, plastic, or metal whose

unnecessary parts have been cut out, the uncut areas work in the same
way as number stamps.

2. Intaglio — Intaglio works in a manner that is nearly the opposite of relief

printmaking. The artist creates grooves with either an instrument or
with acid instead created raised areas. The ink seeps into the grooves
and is printed after the printing press pushes paper into the surface.

3. Lithography —A type of printing which uses a flat piece of material such

limestone or aluminum. Greasy medium like grease crayons, or a more
liquid gas solution was added to the areas that are to be printed. The ink
will then adhere to greased areas after the surface is treated with a
chemical solution.

4. Screen Printing — also referred to as Serigraphy, this uses silk or other

fine material tightly stretched on a frame. Areas which will not be
printed on areas which will not be printed on block with various
materials, and ink is applied and pressed through the fabric with water
to which a rubber blade has been attached.
5.2 Broadcast Media

Both radio and television content that are transmitted through local
station national networks, and public organization make up broadcast media.

Broadcast Media provides helpful information that can inform and

educate people. It includes public service announcements, daily new, weather
forecast, interviews, and documentaries. Aside from being informative,
broadcast media can also be recreational the form of reality shows, comedies,
movies, sports, and advertising.

Morse code, the earliest broadcasting method which is done by sending

telegraph signals over the airways, was a system developed in the 1830s by
Samuel F. B. Morse, Physicist Joseph Henry and Alfred Vall.

Several methods used in broadcasting:

 Cable Radio
 Direct-broadcast satellite
 Radio Broadcasting Telephone
 Television
 Webcasting

5.3 Digital Media

In digital media, contents are organized and distributed in digital

platforms. Internet is a medium that provides means of exchanging
information worldwide through a series of interconnected computers. It is also
known as “networks of networks”. Although the internet emerged in the US in
the 1970s, it only became visible to the public in the 1990s. Today, it is
accessible to anyone with a computer and internet connection. Here are the
advantages and disadvantages of using the internet as medium:
Pros Cons

 It gives detailed information.  A computer and connection are
 It is interactive and global. needed for access.
 It reaches users easily.  Security is a primary concern.

A person can use the internet for almost any purpose that is reliant on
information since it is very capable and powerful. It is accessible to every
individual who connects to one of the networks that are associated with it.
Since the 1990s, the internet has greatly influenced and upgraded
communication to global standards. Billions of internet users rely on the
internet for:
 Financial Services;

 Online shopping
 Social networking
 Web-enabled audio/video conferencing services.

5.4 Media Convergence

How often do you experience chatting with someone via Messenger
while browsing the internet or watching a video? Well, that is media
convergence. The word “converge” means meeting at a point. It has the same
meaning with join, unite, and come together. Media convergence is the
combination of multiple media in a product, process, or system. Therefore, it
occurs when two or more media are merged together.

A good example of media convergence in a product is the smartphone

which is so common nowadays. The smartphone is the convergence of
computing, communication, and content, frequently referred to in
convergence theory as the three Cs. With just one tool (smartphone), one may
now compute his expenses for the week, while chatting with his friend and
reading an article online.
Media convergence has also changed the system of everyday life like
how people create, use, and share media. For instance, one of your favorite
artists will be having a concert in the country—how do you think you will find it
out? By reading it on a newspaper? By reading it from Twitter? The answer will
be probably from the last. Thanks to your friends and Facebook and people
you follow on Twitter who share the latest updates.

Media convergence has also improved processes such as how people do

their jobs. For instance, before, a Photographer simply takes some eye
catching photos, films short video clips, and tweets about the services he offers
—A combination of different technologies.

Here are other examples of media convergence:

Products Merged Media
 Smartphone Telephone, camera, computer,
television, radio, map, newspaper, and
more.
 Computer Camera, music player, video player, web
browser, and more.
 Google Mail, search, drive, PlayStore, wallet,
android, hangout, chrome, maps, and
more
 Facebook Facebook, Messenger, Hangout,
Instagram, WhatsApp

The merging of different media, incorporating new personalized services

is both impressive and overwhelming. The adoption of high-performance
computers, shift to digital platforms, and creation of high speed computer
networks have brought us new to doing things.
