Unit 4 Network Models

This document discusses various network transmission media and network devices. It describes three main types of transmission media - twisted pair cables, coaxial cables, and optical fibers. It then discusses the characteristics of these transmission media such as cost, bandwidth, attenuation etc. The document also discusses network devices such as bridges, switches, routers and gateways that are used to connect devices and transmit data over the network. It emphasizes the importance of securing Wi-Fi connections by changing the network name, passwords and enabling encryption.

Network Models

We want to transmission of data, voice or

video over the network. For that we use basic
three type transmission media,

 Twisted pair
Unshielded twisted pair cable
Shielded twisted pair cable

 Coaxial cable
Thin coaxial cable – 10 base e
Thick coaxial cable – 10 base 5

 Optical fiber

1. Twisted pair cable

Twisted cable consist of two insulated copper
wires arranged in spiral patten to minimize the
electromagnetic interface between adjancent
pairs.

4.6 Characteristics of
transmission media
 Cost
 Installation requirement
 Bandwidth
 Band Usage
 Attenuation
 Immunity from electromagnetic
interference

Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred
through a communication medium in a unit of
time is called bandwidth.
The bandwidth of digital signal is measured
in bits per second or bytes per second.
The bandwidth of analog signal is
measured in seconds or hertz.
Band usage
Two ways to transmission media are with
baseband and broadband transmission.
Baseband transmits only signal at a
time and digital signal are commonly called
baseband signal.
Broadband is a technique t transmit
large amount of data such as voice and video
over long distance.

Multiplexing
It is combinational circuit that selects
binary information from one of many input
lines and directs it output line.
Frequency-division multiplexing is an
analog technique that can be applied when the
bandwidth of a link is greater than the
combined bandwidth of this signals to be
transmitted.

Attenuation
It is a measure of how much a signal weakens
as it travels through a medium.

Network devices
Network devices mainly two parts
1. End use devices
2. Network devices

End use devices

Any laptops, tablet, smart phones, or other
mobile devices are end use devices.

Bridges
 Bridges sit between Hub-connected hosts
 Bridges only two ports
 Bridges is a network device which is use
to divide a LAN into multiple segment.
 Bridge works under data link layer of OSI
model.
 Bridge stores the MAC address of pc
available in a network.
 Bridge is use to reduce the traffic.

Network Interface card (NIC)

 A network interface card is a piece of
hardware that connects computer to
network.
 It allows the computer to send and receive
data over the network by translating digital
signals into electrical signals that can be
transmitted over network cables or
wireless connection.

Switch
 Switch facilitate communication within a
network
 Network grouping of hosts which
require similar connectivity
 Hosts on a network share the same
IP address space.

 Switch is a multicast networking

device works under datalink layer of
OSI model that connects bunch of
computers or devices in a network.

filtering, redirecting)

Gateway
 A gateway is a network node that connects
two networks using different protocols
together.

 It also acts a “gate” between two networks.

It may be a router firewall, server, or other
device that enables traffic to flow in and
out of the network.
 Router can communicate between two
different network using the same protocol
on the other hand A gateway is a network
node that connects two networks using
different protocols together.
 Gateway is also called protocol converter.

Wi-Fi Data security

 Securing Wi-Fi connection is an
important element of securing your
personal data.

Change the network name

Change the administrative credentials
Enable WPA2 personal with AES
encryption
Create a network passphrase that meets
recommended guidelines
Enable WPA2 security features on your
client device and enter the passphrase for
your network.
