Assignment Some Applications of Trigonometry

This document provides examples of using trigonometry to solve problems involving angles of elevation and depression. It contains three levels of problems with increasing complexity: Level I involves drawing figures to represent tower heights, chimney heights, shadow lengths, and angles of depression from buildings. Level II contains 5 word problems involving similar concepts like shadow lengths, angles subtended by trees, ladder lengths, distances and heights calculated using elevation angles. Level III provides 6 more complex word problems involving calculating cloud heights, kite string lengths, plane speeds, and boat speeds using changes in elevation angles over time.

SOME APPLIACTIONS OF TRIGONOMETRY

LEVEL-I (DRAW FIGURES ONLY)

A tower stands vertically on the ground. From a point on the ground, which is 15 m away A
from the foot of the tower, the angle of elevation the top of the tower is found to be 60.

An observer 1.5 m tall is 28.5m away from a chimney . The angle of elevation of the
chimney from her eyes is 450 .

The shadow of a tower standing on a level ground is found to be 40 m longer when the sun`
altitude is 300 than when it is 600 .

The angles of depression of the top and the bottom of a 8 m tall building from the top of a
multi –strayed building are 300 and 450 ,respectively.

From a point on a bridge across a river , the angles of depression of the banks on opposite
sides of the river are 300 and 450, respectively . The bridge is at height of 3 m from the
banks .

LEVEL-II
1. A vertical stick 10cm long casts a shadow 8cm long. At the same time, a tower casts a shadow 30m
long. Determine the height of the tower.
2. A person standing on the bank of a river observes that the angle subtended by a tree on the
opposite bank is 60°. When he retreats 20m from the bank, he finds the angle to be 30°. Find the
height of the tree and the breadth of the river.
3. A ladder, leaning against a wall, makes an angle of 60° with the horizontal. If the foot of the ladder
is 2.5m away from the wall, find the length of the ladder.
4. A man standing on the deck of a ship, which is 10m above the water level, observes the angle of
elevation of the top of a hill as 60° and the angle of depression of the base of the hill as 30°.
Calculate the distance of the hill from the ship and the height of the hill.
5. A pole 6m high casts a shadow 2√3𝑚 long on the ground, what is the sun’s elevation
LEVEL-III
6. The angle of elevation of a cloud from a point 60m above a lake is 30° and the angle of depression
of its reflection in the lake is 60°, find the height of the cloud.
7. A boy is standing on the ground and flying a kite with 150m of string at an elevation of 30°.
Another boy is standing on the roof of a 25m high building and flying a kite at an elevation of 45°.
Find the length of string required by the second boy so that the two kites meet, if both the boys
are on the opposite side of kites.
8. An aero plane, flying horizontally 1000m above the ground, is observed at an angle of elevation
60° from a point on the ground. After a flight of 10 seconds, the angle of elevation at the point of
observation changes to 30°. Find the speed of the plane in m/sec.
9. A man in a boat rowing away from light house 150m high takes 2 minutes to change the angle of
elevation of the top of light house from 60° to 30°. Find the speed of the boat.
