GRADE 7 Quiz bee QUESTIONS

1. If the polynomial 10x2 − 2x − 24 is divided by 2x - 3, the quotient is 5x + a and the remainder is x + b. Find the
values of a and b.
SOLUTION:
5x + 6
2x - 3 10x2 – 2x – 24
10x2 – 15x
13x – 24
12x – 18
x–6
Therefore, a = 6 and b = -6.
2. A camera drone travels at a speed of 50 miles per hour. How many feet can it travel if its maximum flight
time is 20 minutes?
SOLUTION:
50 miles 5280 feet 1 hour
x x x 20 minutes=88 000 feet
1 hour 1 mile 60 minutes
3. An angle is thirty more than twice its complement. How large is the angle?
SOLUTION:
x = 2(90 - x) + 30
x = 180 – 2x + 30
3x = 210
x = 70°
4. Find x and y so that the ordered data set below has a median of 37 and a range of 65: 17, 22, 26, 29, 34, x,
42, 67, 70, y
SOLUTION:
The median of the data set is the middle number or average of two middle numbers when arranged in
ascending or descending order.

The range of the data set is the difference between the highest and lowest values.

To get x, we use median. The middle numbers are 34 and x whose average is 37. Solving for x, we have:
34+ x
= 37
2
34 + x = 74
x = 40
We use range to find y. y should be the highest, 17 the lowest, and the range is 65. Solving for y, we have: y –
17 = 65
y = 82
5. A rectangular grass lawn is 5x 2y meters long and 3xy meters wide. On its edges are flower beds which are x
meters wide. What is the area planted by grass only?
SOLUTION:
The flower beds are surrounding the grass which is x meters wide in all sides of a lawn. To get the size of the
grass area, subtract the length and width of a lawn by 2x (x meters from opposite sides). The grass area is
(5x2y – 2x) meters long and (3xy – 2x) meters wide, and the area is (5x 2y – 2x) (3xy – 2x) = (15x3y2 – 10x3y –
6x2y + 4x2) square meters.
6. What is the fraction form of 0.12454545...?
SOLUTION:
0.12454545... = 0.12 + 0.00454545... = 12/100 + 45/9900 = 1233/9900 = 157/1100
7. A tank can be filled by one pipe stream in 5 hours, and by another pipe stream in 4 hours. It can be emptied
by a third pipe stream in 7 hours. How long will it take to fill the tank if all pipes are open?

8. A man invested part of ₱10,000 at 6% and the rest at 7%. The annual income from the 7% investment was
₱35 less than seven times the annual income from the 6% investment. How much did he invest at each rate?

SOLUTION:
Let x = amount invested at 6%
10,000 – x = amount invested at 7%

0.07 ( 10,000−x )=7 ( 0.06 x )−35

700−0.07 x=0.42 x−35
70,000−7 x=42 x−3,500
−7 x−42 x=−3,500−70,000
−49 x=−73,500

10,000−x=₱ 8,500
9. Mrs. Torres conducted a survey among her students to determine their preferred pet. Fifty-five students
chose dogs, fifty chose cats, ten chose rabbits, and 5 chose other animals. If Mrs. Torres wishes to represent
these data using a pie chart, what angle would the sector for cats be?
SOLUTION:
A pie chart or pie graph is a circular graph that divides into regions resembling each a slice of a pie. The pie
graph above represents Mrs. Reyes’ pet survey results.

A total of 55 + 50 + 10 + 5 = 120 students took part of her survey. Those students make up a full 360° angle in
a graph.

Students who chose cats cover up 50/120 = 5/12 of a full circle in a pie graph.

Therefore, the angle of the sector should be 5/12 (360) = 150° for cats.
10. When a number is subtracted from its additive inverse, the result is 16. What is the number?
SOLUTION:
If x is the number, -x is its additive inverse.
-x – x = 16
-2x = 16
x = -8
GRADE 8 QUIZ BEE
1. The longest side of a triangle is thrice the shortest side and the third side is 2 cm shorter than
the longest side. If the perimeter of the triangle is at least 61 cm find the minimum length of the
shortest side.

Solution:
Let S1 be the shortest side , S2 be the third side and S3 be the longest side of the
triangle
S3 = 3S1 and S2 = S3 -2
S1 + S2 + S3 ≥ 61
S1 + S3 - 2 + 3S1 ≥ 61
S1 + 3S1 - 2 + 3S1 ≥ 61
7S1 ≥ 63
S1 ≥ 9

2. A car park charges Php 45 for the first 3 hours and Php 5 for every succeeding hour or a
fraction thereof. Another car park charges Php 20 for the first 3 hours and Php 10 for every
succeeding hour or a fraction thereof. In how many hours would a car owner pay the same
parking fee in any of the two car parks?

Solution: Let x be the number of hours

5 (x-3) + 45 = 10 (x – 3) + 20
5x – 15 + 45 = 10x – 30 + 20
-5x = -40

Since we cannot have terms that are non – integers, we can only accept 2 as the value of x.

Thus, the sequence is (3, 6, 12, . . .) making the common ratio of 2.

6. If the circle has the equation x2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0, then each point on the circle must satisfy this
equation. By substituting, we get

(-3, 4): -3D + 4E + F = -25

(4, 5): 4D + 5E + F = -41

(1, -4): D – 4E + F = -17.

We subtract the first equation from the second equation and the third from the second and eliminate F,
to obtain

7D + E = -16, 3D + 9E = -24,

We solve these simultaneously and get D = -2, E = -2. Substituting back into any one of the original
three equations gives F = -23. The equation of the circle is

x2 + y2 – 2x – 2y – 23 = 0.

The center and radius are obtained by completing the square. We write

(x2 – 2x + ___) + (y2 – 2y + ____ ) = 23 and so (x – 1)2 + (y – 1)2 = 25

The center is at (1, 1); the radius is 5 C(1, 1) and r = 5 ANSWER

7. The sample space is S= {any combination of two cards} whose cardinality is

n(S) = C(52,2) = 1326. Let A = event of getting two diamonds and it can be argued that
78
n(A) = C(13,2) = 78, and consequently, P(A) = 1326 . In addition, let B = event of getting two face cards
66
and we have n(B) = C(12,2) = 66. Hence, P(B) = 1326 . Now, there are 13 diamonds,

C (3 , 2) 3 1
3 of which are face cards so P(A and B) = C(52 , 2) = 1326 = 442 . Therefore,

78 66 1 47
P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B) = 1326 + 1326 - 442 = 442 ANSWER

Station 6:
Materials: 5 Comic books
Problem: There are five comic books numbered from 1 to 5. In how many ways can they be arrange so that part 1
and part 3 are never together?

Solution:
Number of ways 5 parts can be arranged = 5! = 120
Number of ways part 1 and part 3 are always together = 4! X 2! = 48
Total number of arrangements that they are not together = 120 – 48 = 72

5! – (4! X 2!) = 72

Answer: 72 ways
