ENGLISH
General Overview
For the English Language mock examination the students took an authentic Paper One which consisted of non-fiction text
analysis and comparison, followed by article or letter writing.
This term they have completed their coverage of the texts for this first paper and studied how to compare and contrast
these with previously unseen texts. After the winter break, the focus will be on the second paper which comprises creative
writing and some contextual analysis of fictional texts and poetry.
Teacher Comment
Martina's mock examination result was exceptional, driven by an outstanding piece of writing that achieved almost full
marks. I would like to see this as a sign of what she is able to do next May! Her grade for the analysis section of the paper
was in the 7 band and this is where she needs to focus her studies as she will have more of this in Paper 2 with the analysis
of fictional texts as well as creative writing. Martina has an excellent attitude to her studies and I am interested to see what
she is able to achieve over the next 6 months.
Mrs Oxley
ENGLISH LITERATURE
General Overview
For their mock examination in English Literature students took a Paper 1. This comprises the analysis of an unseen poem, a
comparative essay on two poems they have previously studied and an essay on the set text 'Of Mice and Men' which they
studied in Year 10. It is a demanding paper and showed that they still have work to do.
This term we have completed our studies of the anthology poetry so that in the New Year we can move on to Romeo and
Juliet, the last set text for the course. The rest of the time before May will be spent on thorough revision of the previously
studied 'Of Mice and Men and an Inspector Calls, thus the whole course will feel fresh in their minds for the examinations.
This calls for determination and good study skills from the students who will need good clear notes and summaries.
Teacher Comment
Martina has had a good term in Literature. Her mock examination result showed that she is getting to grips with the idea of
poetry comparison and there were signs of the awareness of the context of 'Of Mice and Men'. Overall the paper was a 5+
and will be higher in the final with thorough revision, especially of the novel.
Mrs Oxley
MATHEMATICS
General Overview
This tem we have been focusing on Grade 6 and 7 material from the Matheatics higher level syllabus. This has included a
range of topics that were examinaed in the Mock examination in November. We will continue to identify key areas to focus
our revision while also learning some new areas of mathematics.
Teacher Comment
Martina has worked hard this term in Mathematics, and is now making good progress towards her target grade. In class,
Martina is focused and diligent, and she is not afraid to ask for help when needed. This has meant that she has been able to
improve her understanding in a number of different areas. She does lack confidence and I am supporting her in
understanding the key concepts to attain a grade 7. For Martina to continue making progress towards her target grade, and
achieve the potential that she is showing, she must focus on the following key topics: repeated % change, cosine rule and
area of a non-right angled triangle, simultaneous equations, proportion problem involving area and volume and inequalities
on graphs.
Mr Wright
BIOLOGY
General Overview
During this tern we have finished topic 5, Health and Disease and then carried out a number of core practicals from topic 1
including food testing, investigating the activity of enzymes at different temperatures and pH's, the transport of water in
and out of cells in changing solute concentrations, and most recently, antibiotics and their affect against bacteria. The first
cycle test was very much practical based and proved to be a challenge for many students but this is something that will
improve as they have opportunities to revisit the principle of lab based investigations. Students had a couple of revision
lessons prior to their mock and have since been given their grades.
Teacher Comment
Martina performed well in her recent Biology mock exam achieving a commendable grade 8 with 76%. She is a very able
student who could achieve a grade 9 but she needs to work on her calculations and ensure that she reads the questions
very carefully. She lost a few marks here and there due to silly mistakes rather than lack of knowledge, but these things can
be addressed easily as she continues into the coming term. In class, Martina is hard working and motivated student and
these are the qualities that will drive her to achieve her full potential in her GCSE. Very well done, Martina!
Miss Murphy
CHEMISTRY
General Overview
This term we have completed The chemistry of groups 1, 7 and 18, rates of reaction, thermal energy changes, rates of
reaction, fuels and atmospheric science. Students have also completed the required practicals associated with this content.
This is approximately 50% of the content covered in Paper 2. They have had a cycle test in October and their mock
examination in November. Results have been released to them. We aim to complete all the scientific content for the GCSE
chemistry course before Easter. This will leave sufficient time for effective revision before the start of the exam period.
Teacher Comment
Martina is a capable student who has all the attributes necessary to attain top grades in chemistry. It was a little
disappointing therefore, that she attained grade 5 and grade 6 for her cycle test and November mock examination
respectively. Organising one's time to satisfy the needs of all the GCSE subjects being studied can be difficult, but has to be
managed in order to attain top grades in all subjects. Analysis of Martina's mock paper indicated that not all topics had
been revised effectively. I am confident that Martina will manage her time better next term and that this will allow her
ability and hard work to result in higher grades next term. Completing past paper questions to challenge her understanding
will help her to make the progress she is capable of.
Mr Hussain
FRENCH
General Overview
The aim of this course is to develop an ability to use the language effectively for practical communication. The course is
based on the linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing, and these are built on as learners progress
through their studies.
The syllabus also aims to offer insights into the culture of countries where French is spoken, thus encouraging positive
attitudes towards language learning and towards speakers of other languages.
This term we have worked on several topics like my home and area, public services, weather, transports and festivals and
traditions. We have also prepared our mock exams with a lot of past papers and are currently working on our speaking
exams.
Teacher Comment
I am delighted to highlight the remarkable progress that Martina has made in French class this term. Her commitment to
learning is truly commendable, evident in significant advancements in reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. The
enthusiasm she brings to the subject is noticeable, creating a positive and engaging learning environment. I encourage her
to persevere on this journey, as her excellent attributes and skills shine through, making a lasting impact on her language
proficiency. It is recommended that she uses linguascope to practise content but also grammar websites to learn more
about verbs and conjugation as they become difficult and complex throughout the year.
For her mock exams, Martina got an 8 for paper 1 and an 8 for paper 2.
Miss Vallet
GEOGRAPHY
General Overview
During term 1, iGCSE Geography pupils have completed the Economic Activity and Energy paper 2 unit and been assessed
on it. They then started the final Paper 1 unit, Coastal Environments leading up to the mock exams. Pupils were examined
on all the full units covered since the start of year 10, including a section on Urban fieldwork relating back to the Cartagena
trip investigating environmental quality in the city. Having reflected on this mock exams, pupils will now complete the
Coastal unit before finishing the final paper 2 unit on Climate Change and Fragile Environments.
Teacher Comment
Martina continues to be an outstanding pupil to teach and has continued her progress in term 1. She achieved a level 7 in
the mock exams, although her previous couple of assessments have been level 8 and this would be the minimum I want to
see Martina achieve in the finals. She is very focussed in class, up to date with all work and revises thoroughly for tests. Her
responses to the Hazardous Environments and Economic Activity units were outstanding, but less consistent in Urban
Environments and the fieldwork sections, evidencing a need to focus revision, and practice exam questions in these areas.
Using the mark scheme to edit her responses in purple pen is also recommended. Martina is still very much on track to be
very successful in the finals. Well done Martina. A pleasure to teach.
Mr Hunkin
HISTORY
General Overview
This term iGCSE students have been studying the development of dictatorship in Germany. We started with the end of
WW1 and the devastating impact this had on the German nation and then traced the successes and failures of the Weimar
government. This was then compared to the rise of the NSDAP at the same time and the way that Hitler was able to exploit
the unique social, economic and political conditions in Germany to gain total power in 1934. Te students gave presentations
on the impact the Nazi dictatorship had on the every day life of Germans and the development of the holocaust during
WW2. In the New Year the students will begin their last unit on Super power relations during the Cold War.
Teacher Comment
Martina is a brilliant student in History and I know she really wants to get a 9 in her iGCSE this Summer. Based on the mock
exam I am confident she can achieve a top grade but she will need to revise fully with no exceptions if she is looking for
that 9. Martina should also be accessing past papers and these will allow her to develop her exams skills. Overall Martina
has shown consistent hard work and excellent participation this term and should be very pleased with her progress.
