S9 Unit 8 Worksheets

The document summarizes a worksheet about interpreting a graph showing the rate of reaction between calcium carbonate and sulfuric acid over time. It contains questions asking students to describe features of the graph in different time periods, calculate average reaction rates from 10-20 seconds and 60-80 seconds by reading volumes from the graph, and compare the two reaction rates. A support sheet provides guidance on interpreting the graph and calculating rates. An extension sheet contains additional rate calculation questions and asks students to compare all four reaction rates.

CAMBRIDGE LOWER SECONDARY SCIENCE 9 UNIT 8: RATES OF REACTION

Name ___________________________________ Date _____________

Worksheet 8.1
Interpreting a graph
This graph shows the rate of reaction in a reaction between calcium carbonate and sulfuric acid.

1 a Describe what the graph shows about the rate of reaction in the first 40 seconds.

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________
b Describe what the graph shows about the rate of reaction between 40 and 80 seconds.

_______________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________
c Describe what the graph shows about the rate of reaction after 80 seconds.

2 Use the graph to find out the average volume of carbon dioxide gas given off per second
in the period between 10 and 20 seconds.
a How much gas has been given off after 10 seconds?

_______________________________________________________________________________
b How much gas has been given off after 20 seconds?

_______________________________________________________________________________
c How much gas is given off in these 10 seconds?

_______________________________________________________________________________
d How much gas is given off in 1 second? This is the rate of reaction.

_______________________________________________________________________________
3 Use the graph to find out the average volume of carbon dioxide gas given off per second
in the period between 60 and 80 seconds.
a How much gas has been given off after 60 seconds?

_______________________________________________________________________________
b How much gas has been given off after 80 seconds?

_______________________________________________________________________________
c How much gas is given off in these 20 seconds?

_______________________________________________________________________________
d How much gas is given off in 1 second? This is the rate of reaction.

_______________________________________________________________________________
4 Compare the two rates of reaction you have calculated.

CAMBRIDGE LOWER SECONDARY SCIENCE 9 UNIT 8: RATES OF REACTION

Support sheet
1 Think how steep the line is in each case. Does this mean the rate of reaction is fast or slow?
Has the reaction stopped?

2 Remember to find the difference between the volume of gas produced at the earlier time and
the later time. The rate of reaction is measured in volume of gas produced per second.
One way of doing this so that you can read it off the graph easily is to draw a line at 10 seconds
on the horizontal axis up to where it meets the line of the graph (A), then draw another line up
at 20 seconds (B). Draw a line across as shown (C).

CAMBRIDGE LOWER SECONDARY SCIENCE 9 UNIT 8: RATES OF REACTION

3 This time draw a line at 60 seconds on the horizontal axis up to where it meets the line of the graph.
Then draw another line up at 80 seconds. Draw a line to join these two as you did before.
Remember to find the difference between the volume of gas produced at the earlier time and
the later time. The rate of reaction is measured in volume of gas produced per second.

4 When you are asked to compare two things you need to say ‘the rate of reaction between 10 and 20

seconds was _____ cm3 of carbon dioxide gas given off per second, whereas the rate of reaction

between 60 and 80 seconds was _____ cm3, which is much faster or slower’.

You must compare the two things and not just say what the two rates are.

Worksheet 8.3A
True or false?
For each of the statements below, decide whether it is correct or incorrect.
Put a tick or a cross next to the statement.
If a statement is incorrect, write the correct statement underneath.

1 When a reaction takes place, the products are used up.

(The substances you start a reaction with are the reactants.
The substances you end up with are the products.)

__________________________________________________________________________________

2 For chemical reactions to take place, the particles must collide.

(Think about what happens to make a chemical reaction take place.)

__________________________________________________________________________________

3 When a chemical reaction takes place, new substances are formed.

(Think about the reactants and products in a reaction.)

__________________________________________________________________________________

4 The mass of the reactants and the mass of the products in a reaction are different.
(Think about how the products are formed.)
__________________________________________________________________________________

5 The rate of reaction can be measured by the speed at which the products are formed.
(Think about the ways in which you have measured the rate of reaction.)
