Quick tip:
Number of tablets = what you want / what you’ve got
A patient is prescribed 80mg of furosemide but the tablets are available as 40mg each. How
many tablets are required?
Answer: 80mg (what you want) is divided by 40mg (what you’ve got) which gives you an answer
of 2 tablets.
Quick tip:
Number of measures = amount prescribed / amount per measure
The measure is the unit amount of liquid. In this case it is one millilitre.
Drug X is available as 100mg/ml and 200mg is prescribed. What volume will be given in ml?
Answer: The amount prescribed is 200mg and the amount per measure is 100mg. 200mg
divided by 100mg is 2. Each measure is 1ml so we should give 2x1ml = 2ml
