Lesson Representing Real-Life Situations
Using Exponential Functions
1
Many real world phenomena can be modelled by functions that describe how
things grow or decay as time passes. Examples of such phenomena include the
studies of populations, bacteria, growth of a pandemic, radioactive substances,
temperature, loan interest rates, and investments.
Let’s Recall
You and a friend are playing a number guessing game. You asked your
friends to think of a positive number, square the number, multiply by 2, and then
add 3. If your friend's final answer is 53, what was the original number chosen?
Use the concept of inverse function.
Solution
Suppose 𝑥 is the number, then the required function is 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥² + 3. Now,
figure (a) below is not a one-to-one function because the graph does not satisfy the
horizontal line test. However, the instruction pointed that the original number must
be nonnegative. Thus, we will restrict the domain to 𝑥 ≥ 0, as shown by figure (b)
which is now a graph of one-to-one function.
We learned that if the function is one-to-one, then the inverse exists, that is,
𝑥−3
𝑓 −1 (𝑥) = √
2
Hence, evaluating the inverse function at 𝑥 = 53 to get the original number,
we have
3
53−3 50
𝑓 −1 (53) = √ = √ = √25 = 5.
2 2
Try this!
The following functions are not one-to-one. Restrict their domains so that
the resulting functions are one-to-one. Find the inverses of the functions with
restricted domain. (Note: There may be more than one answer for each item).
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥 + 2)²
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥² − 16
Let’s Explore
Activity 1
Number of fold 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Number of regions 1 2
Fractional area of each region 1 ½
Questions:
1. What pattern can be observed from the data?
2. Make formula for the number of regions and fractional area of each region as a
function of the number of fold.
Answers
4
It can be observed that as the number of fold increases by one, the number
of regions doubles. If 𝑟 is the number of regions, and 𝑥 is number of fold, then 𝑟 =
2𝑥 . This rapid development of new regions as illustrated in the table is called
exponential growth However, the same observation as the number of fold increases
by one, the fractional area of each region shrinks. If 𝑎 is the fractional area of each
region, and 𝑥 is the number of folds, then 𝑎 = 2−𝑥 . This rapid shrinkage of fractional
area of each region as described by the illustrative table is called exponential decay.
Let’s Elaborate
A. Exponential Growth
Suppose a quantity 𝑦 increases every 𝑇 units of time and let 𝑦0 be the initial
amount, then the quantity 𝑦 after 𝑡 units of time is given by the formula
𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 (1 + 𝑟) ⁄𝑇 where 1 + 𝑟 is the growth factor
Example 1
Suppose Taguig City with population 804,915 in 2017 has been growing at a
rate of 4.32% per year. If this rate continues, find the projected population in the
year 2022.
Solution
Given: 𝑦0 = 804,915 𝑟 = 4.32% 𝑜𝑟 0.0432 𝑡 =
5 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠
𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑝𝑜𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝑦) = _______
Since the population grows every year, then the required models is
𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 (1 + 𝑟) ⁄𝑇
Now, solving for the value of 𝑦, we have
𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 (1 + 𝑟) ⁄𝑇
5⁄
= 804,915(1 + 0.0432) 1
= 804,915(1.0432)5
= 994,461.3589
𝑦 ≈ 994,461
Therefore, after 5 years the city will have a projected population of 994,461.
5
B. Exponential Decay
Suppose a quantity 𝑦 decreases every 𝑇 units of time and let 𝑦0 be the initial
amount, then the quantity 𝑦 after 𝑡 units of time is given by the formula
𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 (1 − 𝑟) ⁄𝑇 where 1 − 𝑟 is the decay factor
Example 2
The number of employees for a certain company has been decreasing each
year by 4%. If the company currently has 1000 employees and this rate
continuous, find the number of employees in 6 years.
Solution
Given: 𝑦0 = 1000 𝑟 = 4% 𝑜𝑟 0.04 𝑡 = 6 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠
Since the number of employees decreases every year, then the required
models is
𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 (1 − 𝑟) ⁄𝑇 . Now, solving for the value of 𝑦, we have
𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 (1 + 𝑟) ⁄𝑇
6⁄
= 1000(1 − 0.04) 1
= 1000(0.96)6
= 782
Solution
𝑡 72
Given: 𝑦0 = 400 𝑝𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑟 = 0.5 (ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑓 − 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒) = = 4.8
𝑇 15
Since the problem models an exponential decay, then the required formula is
1 𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 ( ) ⁄𝑇 . Solving for the variable 𝑦, we have
2
1 𝑡
𝑦 = 𝑦0 ( ) ⁄𝑇
2
= 400(0.5)4.8
= 400(0.5)4.8
= 14.35872944
𝑦 ≈ 14.36 𝑝𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠
6
C. Compound Interest
Another application of exponential growth is the compound interest. If the
interest earned on money in a saving account is allowed to accumulate, then the
𝑟
formula is given by 𝐹 = 𝑃(1 + )𝑚𝑡
𝑚
where
𝐹 = amount in the account after t years
𝑃 = initial deposit
𝑟 = annual rate
𝑚 = number of times a year the interest is paid
𝑡 = number of time interval that have passed.
Example 3
₱400,000 is invested at an interest rate at 10%. Find (the nearest peso) the
amount of investment at the end of five years if interest is compounded quarterly.
Solution
Given: 𝑡 = 5
𝑃 = 400,000
r = 10% = 0.10
𝑚 = 4 (𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑙𝑦)
𝐴𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 (𝐹) = _____
𝑟
𝐹 = 𝑃(1 + )𝑚𝑡
𝑚
0.10 (4)(5)
= 400,000(1 + )
4
20
= 400,000(1.025)
= 655,446.5761
𝐹 = ₱655,447.
In continuous compounding, cash payments occur once per year, but the
compounding is continuous throughout the year. The formula is given by
𝐹 = 𝑃𝑒 𝑟𝑡 where 𝐹 = future worth
𝑃 = the original principal amount
𝑟 = nominal annual interest rate
𝑡 = length of time the interest is applied
𝑒 = Euler's Number equivalent to 2.71828…
Example 4
A businessman wishes to have ₱1,000,000 in a certain investment fund at
the end of 20 years. How much should he invest in the fund that will pay 7%
compounded continuously?
Solution
7
1,000,000
𝑃= 4.0546
𝑃 = ₱246, 633.45

Let’s Recall
𝑥−1
1. 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 − 1 4. 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 𝑥+2
2. 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 2 5. ℎ(𝑥 ) = √𝑥 − 4

Let’s Elaborate
Example 1
Solve the equation 9𝑥−5 = 27
Solution
Write both sides of the equation in exponential form with same base,
9𝑥−5 = 27
32(𝑥−5) = 33
By the one-to-one property, the base 3 of both side of the equation is
eliminated, thus the equation becomes
2(𝑥 − 5) = 3
2𝑥 − 10 = 3
10
2𝑥 = 3 + 10
2𝑥 = 13
13
𝑥=
2
Example 2
Solve the equation 42𝑥−3 = 32𝑥+1
Solution
Write both sides of the equation in exponential form with same base,
42𝑥−3 = 32𝑥+1
22(2𝑥−3) = 25(𝑥+1)
By the one-to-one property, the base 2 of both side of the equation is
eliminated, thus the equation becomes
2(2𝑥 − 3) = 5(𝑥 + 1)
4𝑥 − 6 = 5𝑥 + 5
−5𝑥 + 4𝑥 = 5 + 6
−𝑥 = 11
𝑥 = −11
➢ If 0 < 𝑏 < 1, then the exponential function 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑥 is decreasing for all 𝑥. This
means that 𝑏 𝑥 > 𝑏 𝑦 if and only if 𝑥 < 𝑦. Thus, if the base is less than 1, the
direction of the inequality is reversed.
Example 3
Solve the inequality 24𝑥−4 < 8𝑥
Solution
Write both sides of the equation in exponential form with same base,
24𝑥−4 < 23𝑥
Now, since the base 2 > 1, then the direction of the inequality is retained,
thus following the one-to-one property of exponential function, base 2 is eliminated
and we have
4𝑥 − 4 < 3𝑥
4𝑥 − 3𝑥 < 4
𝑥<4
Therefore, the solution set to the inequality is {𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ , 𝑥 < 4}
Example 4
1 2𝑥+3 1 𝑥−5
Solve the inequality ( ) ≥ (1000)
100
Solution
Write both sides of the equation in exponential form with same base,
11
1 2(2𝑥+3) 1 3(𝑥−5)
(10) ≥ (10)
1
Now, since the base < 1, then the direction of the inequality is reversed,
10
1
thus following the one-to-one property of exponential function, base is eliminated
10
and we have
2(2𝑥 + 3) ≤ 3(𝑥 − 5)
4𝑥 + 6 ≤ 3𝑥 − 15
4𝑥 − 3𝑥 ≤ −15 − 6
𝑥 ≤ −21
Therefore, the solution set to the inequality is {𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ , 𝑥 ≤ −21}
