success and overall well-being of senior high school students.

Statement of the Problem

This purpose of this study is to compare the Facebook usage of SHS students in

MNHS. And their social relationship with other people and also to identify whose

students are only communicate well on social networking sites rather than

communicating personally. This problem is made more specific in the following

questions:

1. What is the mean score of the SHS students on Facebook Intensity Scale?
2. What is the mean score of the SHS students on Interpersonal Anxiety Scale?

3. Is there any significant relationship that may exist between Facebook Intensity

Usage and Social Anxiety in Academic Achievement?

Significance of the study

The significance of this study for students is profound. It offers valuable insights

into the relationship between social anxiety and excessive Facebook usage, equipping

them with tools to address these issues. By engaging with this study, students can gain

a better understanding of how to overcome their fears, fostering improved interpersonal

interactions, which can, in turn, positively impact their academic achievements. It also

encourages them to recognize that avoiding social interaction can have adverse effects

on both themselves and those around them. Furthermore, this research has the

potential to boost students’ self-esteem, enhance their social skills, and ultimately break

down the barriers of introversion, contributing to their overall academic success.

Scope of Limitation

The scope of limitation is focused on investigating the relationship between two

variables: Facebook usage intensity and social anxiety among senior high school students, with

an emphasis on their academic achievements. Additionally, it aims to explore how social media,

particularly Facebook, can potentially enhance the social functioning of individuals dealing with

social anxiety. The study will involve a total of 150 Respondents from both grades 11 and 12 at

Mabuhay National High School, chosen because of their high exposure to social networking

sites. It’s important to note that the findings of this research will be applicable primarily to the

study’s participants and individuals experiencing social anxiety.

Theoretical framework

Anxiety

According to Davidson (2008) anxiety (also called angst or worry) is a

Psychological and physiological state that characterized by somatic emotional, cognitive

and behavioral component. The experience of an individual can cause anxiety such as

rejection, expectation this two variable have a big effect why people suffering anxiety.

Anxiety is an apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or

anticipate ill: state of being.

Facebook Intensity Usage

Kirschner & Karpinski (2013) examined that Facebook usage impact the academic

Performance. According to Junco (2012) “frequently checking updates on Facebook is

Negatively associated with their engagement in educationally relevant activities.”

Alloway (2013) established that non-Facebook user take higher marks than Facebook

Users. Students’ academic achievements impacted by the Facebook usage (Rouis,

2012).

Academic Achievement

Student’s giving the attention to Facebook usage delay their study and its impact their

Academic Performance (Rouietal, 2011). Boogart (2006) examined negative affiliation

Between Facebook usage and academic involvement. “The higher the Facebook usage

Intensity, the lower the students’ academic performance. Steinfield (2008) constructed
The result that “the higher the Facebook usage, the batter the academic performance”.

According to Kolek & Saunders (2008) there is not any relationship between Facebook

Usage and Academic Performance of students of American university.

Conceptual Framework

This study will examine the relationship between two primary variables:

Facebook usage intensity and social anxiety, with a focus on their impact on academic

achievements. It’s important to note that social anxiety is influenced by several

interconnected factors.
Firstly, anxious attachment plays a role, where individuals who are preoccupied

with attachment tend to have lower self-esteem and self-worth. Secondly, social

rejection, which encompasses various forms such as interpersonal rejection, peer

rejection, romantic rejection, and familial estrangement, can exacerbate social anxiety.

Lastly, experiencing rejection often leads to social depression or a general sense of

feeling down.

This study aims to explore whether these factors, in conjunction with Facebook

and other social media use, can either alleviate or exacerbate social anxiety. The

diagram illustrates how these elements interconnect and their potential impact on

mitigating or worsening social fear.

Hypothesis

Null hypothesis (HO):

The amount of time spent on Facebook, the severity of social anxiety, and

academic achievement among seniors in high school are not significantly correlated.

Therefore, there is no connection between these variables.

Alternative Hypotheses (H1):

The amount of time spent on Facebook, the severity of social anxiety, and

academic achievement among seniors in high school are all significantly correlated. The

evidence points to a connection between these variables.

In this study, statistical analysis will be used to assess if the results support the

alternative hypothesis (a significant correlation) or the null hypothesis (no correlation).

The study can explore the nature and degree of these interactions in greater detail

if a significant link is discovered.

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presented the review related literature after the thorough and in-

depth hunt done by the experimenters. This also presented the abstract literature and

exploration literature to completely understand the exploration to be done.

Facebook Intensity Usage

According to( Choi & Lim, 2016; Shi etal., 2020) stay connected with

companions, individualities routinely spend time checking colorful social networking

spots and operations to circumvent missing out on communication conditions and reply

right down SNSs contribute to a miracle known as “ fear of missing out ”, which play a

significant part in nurturing a feeling of apprehension or apprehension among youthful

generations( Dhir etal., 2018; Park, 2022). This anxiety enables youthful people to

check mobile phones constantly to insure they’ve not missed any dispatches

(Nurudeen etal., 2022).

Social separation amid the wide told multitudinous circles of mortal presence,

and it affected the working of people, counting that of immature individualities, inside

the internal, social and physical spheres. The noteworthy results of an proliferation in

social separating incorporate those related with the ought to alter current practices;

deliver up regular exercises; and alter the ways of eating, resting, recreation and

recreation. The notoriety of Facebook and other online social- networking destinations,

especially among immature individualities( Antheunis, Schouten, & Krahmer, 2014)

has driven to a developing intrigued in exploring the relationship between its use and
internal good issues, in specific social uneasiness( Strickland, 2014). This probe has

appeared disagreeing connections between social uneasiness and Facebook use,

possibly since of Facebook’s altitudinous diversity in degree of social interactivity and

its multitudinous highlights( Dobrean & Pasarelu, 2016).In regard to the available

studies, spending more than two hours a day on social media is linked to mental health

issues like depression, anxiety, and life dissatisfaction (e.g., Jelenchick, Eickhoff, and

Moreno 2013; Hugues and Lewis 2015).

To sum up , This consider set up that in malignancy of the fact that those who

use Facebook more have kindly advanced uneasiness situations, the relationship is

frail and the comes about weren’t factually critical. As specified by (Dobrean and

Pasarelu) (2016), there is a bad link between social activity on Facebook (friends,

images, and videos) and social anxiety. The comes about back latterly writing in that

there are conceivably other variables of Facebook use that may be more predicated

connects of social uneasiness, similar as particular highlights on Facebook as well as

designs and alleviations of use that are more specifically related to communication and

social intelligent.

Social Anxiety

(Choi & Lim, 2016; Shi etal., 2020) Individualities reliably spend time observing

different social organizing websites and operations to remain in touch with companions

in arrange to maintain a strategic distance from lost out on communication musts and

reply as ahead long as conceivable. SNSs play a crucial part within the “ fear of lost

out ” prodigies, which is known to beget immature individualities to feel on edge or

uneasy( Dhir etal., 2018; Stop, 2022). Immature individualities are suitable to check
their phones regularly because of their apprehensiveness to form beyond any

mistrustfulness they’ve not missed any dispatches( Nurudeen etal., 2022).

In addition, a aggregate demonstrate of internal good emphasizes positive

labels of working, similar as private well- being, in expansion to the nonappearance of

psychopathology. The presence of well- being isn’t the same as the nonappearance of

internal sickness, agreeing to current studies of internal good. In order to dwindle the

chance of others conversely association with the Facebook profile, individualities with

social uneasiness may lean toward to use Facebook’s private informing frame( MC

dispatches) rather of Facebook courier( 2017). But more noteworthy dispositional

stress was connected to further noteworthy regular social media use. Suggestions and

a better chance of creating a likely anxiety clutter in a test of developing grown- ups

within the Joined together States.

In conclusion, the web gives a secure space for socially on edge individualities

to dodge face- to- face intuitive. In any case, this too leads to tricky application and

worsens the elusion of offline communication.

Academic Achievement

Based on several studies, spending too much time on Facebook might result in

poor time management, which reduces study time and, as a result, academic

achievement (Junco, 2012; Kirschner & Karpinski, 2010).Many research have looked

into the detrimental impact of heavy Facebook Intensity Usage on academic

achievement. During study sessions, the frequent notifications, news feed updates, and

social interaction’s attraction might be a serious distraction. When distracted by

Facebook-related disruptions, students could find it difficult to stay focused on their

academic work (Rosen et al., 2013). Students frequently multitask between Facebook

and their academic work. According to research, multitasking can place an additional

cognitive load on the brain, decreasing the speed at which information is processed and

perhaps lowering academic performance (Carrier et al., 2015).

The phenomenon of social comparison on Facebook, where individuals compare

themselves to their peers, can have implications for self-esteem. Exposure to the

achievements and activities of others may lead to feelings of inadequacy and decreased

self-esteem, potentially affecting academic motivation (Tandoc et al., 2015).On the

contrary, some studies have explored the positive aspects of Facebook for educational

purposes. Students can benefit from online study groups, academic collaboration, and

the sharing of educational resources on the platform (Madge et al., 2009; Roblyer et al.,

2010).

collaborative and ethically guided setting for systematic investigation this environment

ensures data integrity and ethical standards, enabling meaningful insights into the

interplay of these variables within the specific school context.

Research Subject/ Respondents

The participants in the study will consist of a total of 150 participants senior high school

students both grade 11 and grade 12, These students will be selected to represent

range of academic performance levels, including high achievers, average performers,

and those facing academic challenges.

Sampling Technique

This study was employed probability type of sampling which was systematic sampling in

which sample members from a larger population were selected according to a random

starting point and a fixed periodic interval. This interval, called the sampling interval, is

calculated by dividing the population size by the desired sample size.

Data collection Procedures

The data collection will be asked to report their typical daily time spent on Facebook, the

frequency of their visits to the platform, and the types of activities they engage in on

Facebook. Academic achievement data will be obtained directly from school records.

This includes cumulative grade point averages (GPAs). Social anxiety levels will be

assessed using the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS).

Study Design Instrument

The instrument used were standardized test scales were the primary data collection

tools utilized in this study to collect the information needed to create a student profile.

Both the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and the Facebook Intensity Scale were

broken into two primary parts: the profile and the actual survey. The participant profile

contained information about their demographics, including name, age, place of study,

and gender. These tests were widely developed and used to identify individuals who

had social anxiety disorders and individuals who frequently utilized Facebook to hide

their dread of social interaction.

Ethical

Ethical considerations through by informed consent will be obtained from all

participating students and their legal guardians. Participants will be informed about the

nature and purpose of the study, their right to withdraw at any time, and the

confidentiality of their responses.
