Living in the wild
My life is a great adventure.
I live in an old house in the Scottish wilderness. I got the house 30 years ago. I was tired of landlords
and I wanted to live alone. I decided to save money and buy my own house. There weren’t any windows
and it was very damp inside. I started to make fires and prepare the house for winter.
I am always busy. I always boil potatoes and look for berries. When I see some wood, I pick it up. I
never miss an opportunity to get something for nothing. Sometimes, people visit me. I write letters and
articles for a magazine.
Summer is the best time. I go outside and cook with an outdoor fire. It’s lovely. It’s an easy life. If I want
to stay at home, I can. Three winters ago, a man from Latvia came to visit me. We went skiing in the
mountains. It was a great adventure. But two winters ago, it was a hard life. I travelled regularly to the
city Aberdeen because I needed to go to court. I couldn’t go by car or train, so I travelled on skis – for
six miles. When I got back home, the fires were out and it was cold and wet. It was a nightmare.
To me, this is a normal life. A career is strange for me. I don’t want to work every day and take money
home. This is more simple. It sounds depressing, but for me it’s a great adventure.

Key
1. Outdoors
Students can work alone and check in pairs. Go through the answers with the class. Model and drill pronunciation.
In the second part of the exercise, students revise the use of quantifiers, which was covered in previous lessons,
e.g. ‘We have a lot of lakes in our country’, ‘We don’t have any jungles’, etc. Model with a strong student. If the
students are from the same countries, you could ask individual students specific questions, e.g. ‘Do you have any
mountains in your country?’

5. a lake 6. a forest 7. a tree 8. grass

ago’, ‘last week’, ‘on Wednesday’, etc.
2. in 3. ago 4. on 5. yesterday
5. Find someone who ...
In a large class, have the students complete the questions individually or in pairs. Go through the answers and
then hand out page 5. Have the students stand up and ask each other the questions. Tell them that they cannot
have the same name written down more than three times during this activity. They should ask further questions
(Where did you go? Who did you meet? Did you have a good time? How much exercise did you do? etc.) in order
to complete the information. If the students cannot find anyone to fit the sentences, they should write ‘nobody’
in the space. With a weaker class, you can elicit and write the follow-up questions on the board. Pre-teach the
verb ‘to text’ (send an sms) if the students are unfamiliar with the term.
