TECHNOLOGY OF CAD:
CAD - Computer Aided Design
CAD technology makes use of the computer to create drawings of parts and
assemblies on computer files, which can be further analyses and optimized.
BENEFITS OF CAD
1
With the increase in the use of 3D views and solid modeling, it has become easier to
comprehend the features of the component readily. One does not have to reconstruct the solid
shape from 2D objects. Many software packages allow 3D view generation from a 2D model.
Improved Procedures of Engineering Changes:
Control and implementations of engineering changes can be significantly and improves with
CAD.
Original drawings and reports are available and easily accessible.
Revised Information can be retained and new drawings with changes can be created without
destroying previous features.
Solidworks is a 3-D modeling tool. Unlike other 3-D modeling tools, Solidworks is not fully
three dimensional. Other programs allow the user to easily draw in three dimensional space.
In Solidworks, one draws in a plane and then extrudes solids from the plane. Planes are used
to obtain position in three dimensional space. It is possible to draw in three dimensional
space using Solidworks, but is very difficult. Therefore the best method of creating three
dimensional objects is using planes.

Experiment 11: Model Designing of Ball Bearing Structure
Akash Kacharu Ahire
MD/2023/701
Procedure: The steps involved in designing the ball bearing are discussed below:
Step 2. Convert the unit in the down most right corner from ‘IPS’ ‘MMGS’
44
Step 5. Open a new part and create the following sketch on a plane. Then revolve it around a
centre axis.
Step 6: this will create the basic outer housing of a ball bearing.
45
Step 7: on the plane passing through the centre make the following sketch. the circle touches
the inner curved surface. The number of spokes corresponds to the number of the ball which
will be inserted.
Step 8:
46
this will create the following outer housing
Step 9:
in a new part we will create the inner housing of the bearing. for that create the following
sketch and revolve it around the central axis.
Step 10: for the shaft to have a grip we create grooves in the inner housing. For that make
following sketch and cut it
47
Step 11: you can make two grooves by using mirror feature(optional)
Step 12:
this creates the inner housing for the ball bearing. Now it’s time to create the ball. for that in a
new part create a semicircle and revolve it as follows.
48
Step 13:
in the central plane of the ball create the following sketch. This will be helpful for mating in
the assembly.
Step 14:
open a new assembly. Insert the outer and inner housing in it. mate their respective planes and
their central axis to make them concentric and lie in same plane. for this you will require two
coincident mates (for making them in same plane and for making them concentric).
49
Step 15:
insert the balls. (I am inserting 8 balls which can vary as your wish)
Step 16: now mate one of the marked points in the all with the arc in the outer housing with
the coincident mate...
50
Step 17: then mate the two-axis using coincident mate to align it properly.
Step 18:
mate all the balls similarly.
51
Step 19:
hide the excess lines to make it look good.
52
Step 20:
you can also add an animation using this when using this in any further assembly.
Step 21:
important thing is that "radius of the arc created on the outer housing should be equal to the
sum of the ball diameter and radius of the inner surface of the inner housing". else the balls
will mesh into the housing.
