Solving Linear Equations In One Variable Involving Absolute Value

Name: ___________________________ Section: _____________
School: ___________________________ Date: ________________

I. Learning Competency: Solves linear equations in one variable

involving absolute value (a) by graphing (b)by algebraic method (M7AL-IIi - j-1)

II. Key Concepts:

Absolute value of a number is the distance between 0 and any real
number x on the number line. We say that the absolute value of a
given number is the positive version of that number. For example, the
absolute value of negative 10 is positive 10, and this can be written as
| − 10 | = 10.
The absolute value of 4 is 4. Also, the absolute value of 0 is 0.
For any nonzero absolute value, there are exactly two numbers with that
absolute value
Solution sets are written in set notation using braces, { }. or they may
be given in the form x = a certain real number. Solution of an equation is a
value of the variable that makes the equation true.
Examples of linear equations involving absolute values:
 | n | = 10
 | x− 10 | = 12
 |x-1/2 | = 5/2
 |4x-5 | = 10/3

REMEMBER:
To solve absolute-value equations, perform inverse operations to
separate the absolute-value expression on one side of the equation.
Consider the two cases, absolute value on positive case and absolute
value on the negative case

NOTE:
Not all absolute-value equations have two solutions.
 If the absolute-value expression equals 0, there is one solution.
 If an equation states that an absolute value is negative, there are no
solutions.
 Absolute value must be non-negative because it represents distance.
III. Guided Practice:

Example 1:

Consider the equation | n | = 5. There are two numbers whose

absolute value is 5. These are -5 and 5. Then n = 5 and n = -5 respectively.
|n|=5
Solutions: n = -5 and n=5
Therefore, the values of n are 5 and -5
The absolute value of negative five is the distance from zero to the
negative five on a number line.
The absolute value of five is the distance from zero to positive five of the
number line. The graph below represents the |5| and the |–5|.

Example 2: Find the solution set of |x +2|=7.

Absolute value on positive case Absolute value on the negative case
x +2=7 x +2=−7
x +2=7 x +2=−7
x + 2 + (- 2) = 7 + (- 2) x +2+ (−2 )=−7 +(−2)
Addition Property Addition Property
x +0=5 Simplify. x +0=−9 Simplify.
x=5 x=−9
The solution set is x=5 , x=−9.

To check if the solution set is true, substitute 5 and -9 to ‘ x ’ in the given

equation.

¿ x +2∨¿ 7 Substitute 5 to x |x +2|=7 Substitute -9 to x .

¿ 5+2∨¿ 7 Simplify. ¿−9+2∨¿7 Simplify.
¿ 7∨¿ 7 Simplify. ¿−7∨¿7 Simplify.

Example 3: Find the solution set of |3 x +2|=8.
Absolute value on positive case Absolute value on the negative case
3 x+ 2=8 3 x+ 2=−8
3 x +2=8 3 x+ 2=−8
3 x + 2 + (- 2) = 8 + (- 2) 3 x+ 2+ (−2 )=−8+(−2)
Addition Property Addition Property
3 x =6 3 x =-10
3x(1/3) =6(1//3) 3x(1/3) =-10(1//3)
Multiplication Property Multiplication Property
3 x /3=6 /3 Simplify. 3 x /3=−10 /3 Simplify.
x=2 x=−10 /3
The solution set is x=2, x=−10 /3 .

To check if the solution set is true, substitute 2 and -10/3 to ‘ x ’ in the

given equation.

¿ 3 x+ 2∨¿ 8 Substitute 2 to x |3 x +2|=8 Substitute -10/3 to x .

¿ 3(2)+2∨¿ 8 Simplify.
|( ) |

¿ 8∨¿ 8 Simplify. ¿−8∨¿ 8 Simplify.

Example 4: Find the solution set of |5 x +2|=1 /3 .

Absolute value on positive case Absolute value on the negative case

5 x +2=1/3 5x + 2 = - 1/3
5x + 2 = 1/3 5 x+ 2=−1/3
5x + 2 + (- 2) = 1/3 + (- 2) 5 x +2+ (−2 )=−1 /3+(−2)

5x = -5/3 5x = -7/3
5x(1/5) =(-5/3)(1//5) 5x(1/5) =(-7/3)(1//5)
