UNILORIN MATHEMATICS POST UTME DETAILED SOLUTIONS

1. the five consecutive integers or whole number be x, x+1,x+2,x+3,x+4

mean =( 5x +10)/5 = 30, 5x + 10 = 150, 5x = 150 - 10 = 140, x=140/5 =28.. The
largest = x+4 = 32 = C

2. Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction or part of a whole
number. (examples: -7, 2/3, 3.75) Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be
expressed as a fraction or ratio of two integers. So D is not exact but an
approximation

3. Prime no. Greater than 10 are: 11,13,17,19.

average = [11+13+17+19]/4 = 15. D.

4. 1+3=2² (sum of two consecutive odd no.)

1+3+5=3²(sum of three consecutive odd no.)
follow the trend…
1+3+5+7+9+11+13+15 will be what? Sum of eight consecutive odd no. =8²=p²
P=8
C.

5. 1/0.06 + 1/0.042 = 1/ 6/100 +1/ 42/1000 = 100/6+ 1000/42 =1700/42.

(1/0.06+1/0.042) ⁻¹= (1700/42)⁻¹=42/1700=0.0247
D.

6. A

7. B

8. %increase = (50000 - 40000) /40000 *100 = 25% A

9. Speed = distance/time = 385/55 = 7 B

10. Let b = cost of one biro and

let p= cost of one pencil

Given: 2b + 3p = #18
If a pencil costs #2.5, then 3 pencils will cost (3*2.5 = #7.5)
then cost of 2 biros( 2b) = #18 - # 7.5 = # 10.5.
Then a biro will costs 10.5/2 = #5.25 D

11. Using expansion (a+b)² = a²+b²+2ab,

(√0.7 + √70)² = (√0.7)² + (√70)²+2√0.7*√70
= 0.7 + 70+2√49 = 70.7 +2(7)
= 70.7 +14 = 84.7 = A

12. a:b= 13:11, a/b=13/11, a=13b/11.

a²-b² : (a+b) ² = a²-b²/(a+b)² = (a-b)(a+b)/(a+b)(a+b)= a-b/a+b

(a-b)= 13b/11 - b = 2b/11

(a+b) = 13b/11 + b = 24b/11
a-b/a+b = 2b/11 *11/24b =1/12= D

13. Prime no. Less than 14 are : 2,3,5,7,11,13..

Four no. with greatest sum are:
5,7,11,13.
Sum= 36. A

14. A

15. 10x/100= 4500

x= #45000. A

16. Let's x quantity be bought at y per unit. Total cost = xy

when x is reduced by 10%, it becomes 90x/100.
When y is increased by 15%, it becomes 115y/100.
Total cost = (90x/100)(115y/100) = 10350xy/10000 = 1.035xy.

Increase in the cost = 1.035xy - xy = 0.035 = 35/1000 = 7/200. D

17. Selling an article for #45.00, profit =8%.

Selling price = 108CP/100 = 45, CP= 45*100/108 = 41.67
To make a profit of 32%, Sp= 132CP/100 = 132 * 41.67/100 = #55. B

18. New cost = initial cost - discount

discount = 10/100 * 45000 = 4500
New cost = 45000 - 4500 = 40500. B

19. D

20. B
