Redesign and Redo of Linkedin

Every student, company, and IT professional uses LinkedIn, one of the most popular
websites with over 500 million members and $1.1 billion in revenue. As per the
preliminary 2018 data,

LinkedIn has 40 million users, including recent college grads.

There are about 3 million active job advertisements on LinkedIn.

Of Linked users, 44% make above $75,000 annually.

40% of people use LinkedIn on a daily basis.
Yes, these are all large figures, and the reason for this is the everyday use and
global reach. The portal offers many paid features, such as Lead builder, Sales
alerts, Reference search, InMail messaging, Introductions, References, and Skill
endorsements, in addition to Job listings, company search, and InMail messages.

Procedure

User Study

This is how the process began. Since

this is a frequent issue for most of us, I
tried to bring it up on social media. I
was amazed by the volume of
messages and comments I received on
my essay about the shortcomings in
LinkedIn app design. To ensure that
everyone is covered—young, elderly,
employees, students, males, females,
local, and foreign—I chose to include
18 users out of all of them. Firstly, I
have made a survey consisting of
twenty-five structured questions.
Direct communication with the
potential users—some of whom I saw
in person and others via video interviews—came next. I made an effort to
comprehend and enumerate all of the issues they were dealing with.

Individuals

I developed two user personas after listening to many accounts and remarks. The
first is that of the worker or student, whose ultimate objectives are probably the
same regardless of whether they utilise LinkedIn. The recruiter would be the second
persona. To have a deeper understanding of the user, I developed their mission
statement, end goals, and complaints in their profiles.

Data Interpretation and Workflow Chart

Many thoughts, suggestions, and comments have been sent my way. All of the study
participants had some similar problems, but they never voiced any complaints. In
order to organise and sort the whole set of data, I used methods like card sorting.
Designing using grouped data was considerably more effective, and it made
information architecture creation much simpler for me.

I attempted to analyse the existing situation as a user of applying for employment

and the post-application process after reading through the user feedback. I
discovered numerous instances in the workflow where a lot of time is being spent
and there may be space for improvement. I created a workflow of the current
situation (the image) to aid in understanding.

Since I discovered the system's present

usability issues, I have been brainstorming
solutions to improve the flow. I've been
brainstorming and drawing concurrently to
come up with some things that will really
excite the users. This is a summary of the
features at a glance. When I get to the actual
screens, I'll delve further. You may also view
the early sketches I made of several concepts
and the process I went through to arrive at a
final design.
Problems:-

Search is difficult to use and it is not flexible.

Users don’t want to see the newsfeed on the main page. They care more about finding
jobs.
It is difficult to use the recommendations function. And the recommendations do not
match user-needs.

SOLUTIONS

1. User Engagement:

a. Intuitive User Interface:

● Streamlined Navigation: Simplify the user interface by reducing clutter and
focusing on essential features. A more intuitive design will improve overall
user experience and accessibility.
● Customizable Dashboard: Allow users to personalise their dashboards,
placing the most relevant information at their fingertips. This feature would
cater to diverse user needs and preferences.
b. Enhanced Content Discovery:
● Smarter Algorithm: Invest in refining our recommendation algorithm to
deliver more accurate and personalised content suggestions. Machine
learning models can be employed to understand user behaviour and
preferences, ensuring content relevancy.
● Diverse Content Formats: Encourage users to share diverse content formats,
such as videos, podcasts, and interactive posts. This will not only enrich the
user experience but also align with current content consumption trends.
2. Personalization:

collaborations. This enhances the credibility of user profiles and strengthens
professional networks.
b. AI-driven Recommendations:
● Smart Job Matching: Leverage AI algorithms to provide more accurate job
recommendations by analysing the user's skills, experience, and industry
trends. This will increase the chances of successful job matches and
strengthen LinkedIn's position as a leading professional networking platform.
● Learning Paths: Implement AI-driven learning paths tailored to individual
career goals, suggesting relevant courses, certifications, and skills
development opportunities.
3. Professional Development:

a. Mentorship Program:
● Integrated Mentorship Platform: Introduce a dedicated section for
mentorship, connecting experienced professionals with those seeking
guidance. This not only fosters professional development but also
strengthens the sense of community on LinkedIn.
● Skill-based Networking: Enable users to connect based on specific skills and
expertise, fostering a more targeted and meaningful networking experience.
b. Learning Hub:
● Comprehensive Course Catalog: Expand the LinkedIn Learning library with a
broader range of courses, including soft skills development, industry-specific
certifications, and emerging technologies.
