SECTION A
COMPREHENSION
Read the passage carefully and answer all questions that follow
There is an open secret few students guess; Mrs. Tatuani never goes anywhere
without empty spectacle’s case. One will ask why such a gorgeous woman will
do that. The spectacles case is as vital to her life, yet, she does not wear glasses.
Mrs. Tutuani is a trained teacher who teaches in one of the Basic Schools in
Accra. She never reads in front of her class nor does mark class register. The
students think this is her style of teaching but this is one step short of the truth.
Her problem is that she cannot read. One will wonder how she managed to
become a teacher. Only God knows. She will never go anywhere without it.
The reason is obvious; she can neither read nor write. If ever she gets into any
situation where she might be expected to do either of these things, she fishes
around her for the spec’s case. She finds it empty and asks the person concerned
to do the reading for her. This mostly occurs at staff meetings.
2
She has many ways to conceal her difficulty. She never lingers near a phone for
fear of writing something down. If fact, it is easier for illiterates to conceal the
truth than the rest of us might imagine.
Now that about eighty percent of the students are proficient readers, Mrs.
Tutuani can skilfully get them to read for her. She has been very successful in
her job until recently for the five years, she was without any rank. Now she has
been upgraded for the position of a superintendent. She goes to the office of the
Director of Education to render votes of thanks. She is called but cannot utter a
word, this time she is not to read from paper rather, she should speak orally.
What a shame! The last straw that breaks the Camel’s back is the moment
when the Director asks; “what has come over you?” She becomes speechless.
For a few moment, tears begin to stream down her cheek. Then, she confesses of
being illiterate. What an irony!
