37 Pihu is a student of grade 7. Since few days, she observed that her
grandmother’s new copper bottle was becoming dull due to the formation of
a green coloured coating on it, although it was cleaned every day. She also
observed these changes in other metallic objects like–metal statues, iron nails,

behind this dull appearance of metals and was curious to know whether all
metals show this property. Can this damage to the metal surface be
prevented?

He cross pollinated the plant having yellow round seeds with plant having

produced 482 plants with purple flowers and 162 with white flowers.
What genetic mechanism accounts for these results? Explain.
39 Refraction is the bending of a wave when it passes from one medium to 4
another. The bending is caused due to the differences in optical density
between the two substances. Refraction of light is one of the most commonly
observed phenomena, but other waves like sound waves and water waves
also experience refraction. Refraction makes it possible for us to have optical
instruments such as magnifying glasses, lenses and prisms. It is also because
14
of the refraction of light that we are able to focus light on our retina. The
refractive index, also called the index of refraction, describes how fast light
travels through the material. Desert mirage and looming shown in the
picture given below are optical illusions resulting from refraction of light.
Formation of a rainbow is another example of refraction as the sun rays bend
through the raindrops resulting in the rainbow. The working of a lens is
based on the refraction of light when they pass through it. Principal focus of
a convex lens is a point on the principal axis of the convex lens where all the
light rays parallel to the principal axis converge after passing through the
lens.
