MID Paper ADC

This document provides instructions for a midterm exam on analog and digital communication. It includes two questions with multiple parts each. Question 1 covers topics like modulation index, identifying sideband frequencies, comparing AM and FM modulation, and encoding a data stream using PCM. Question 2 involves calculating sampling rate, quantization levels, data rate, and signal bandwidth for a PCM system, and analyzing performance metrics for a digital system sampling an analog signal. Students have 2 hours to complete the exam, which is worth a total of 80 marks. Clear justification and labeling of diagrams is required to receive full marks.

Analog and Digital Communication Spring 2023

Air University
Mid Term Examination
Spring 2023
Subject: Analog and Digital Communication Total Marks: 80
Course Code: EE 475 Date: Wednesday March 29, 2023
Class: BEEE Fall 2019 Time: 0900-1100 Hours
Semester: VIII Max. Duration: 2 Hours
Section(s): A& B FM Name: Muhammad Tilal

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Calculators are allowed. Try to be neat and organized. Vague or badly motivated answers are considered wrong.
2. Draw properly labeled/formatted relevant graphs/circuit &block diagrams where necessary.
3. In case of any confusion, assume and continue. Clearly justify your assumption, if any.
4. To get full marks, elaborate each step of derivations and design procedures. Attempt all subparts of question together.

Question # 01 [CLO 01  PLO 01  C 02] Marks: 10x05= 50

a. A certain AM transmitter radiates 10kW of power with the carrier unmodulated and 11.8 kW with the carrier
sinusoidally modulated.
1. Indicate the modulation index
2. If another wave modulated to 40% is also transmitted estimate the radiated power.

b. A sub-carrier of 200 kHz is amplitude modulated by tones of 5 and 10 kHz. The resulting AM signal is then used to
amplitude modulate a carrier of 15 MHz. Identify all sideband frequencies in the composite signal and draw
frequency domain display of signal. Assume 100 percent modulation.

c. A radio transmitter TX1 is using amplitude modulation with maximum bandwidth of 10 kHz. Due to some technical
issue, the amplitude modulator stops working. Technicians found out that it will take at least two days to repair the
modulator. They have a frequency modulator and they want to use it to transmit the information using frequency
modulation. Discuss if it is possible with the given constraints and modification? Why or why not?

d. Among FM and AM identify which modulation scheme is better in terms of transmitter efficiency? Justify your
answer.

e. A baseband communication system is designed to transmit a bit stream onto a channel which sometimes inverts the
polarity of waveform due to certain channel effects. Identify one such PCM waveform that will ensure the correct
detection of the data at the receiver in presence of problem stated above. Use the chosen PCM waveform to encode
the bit stream 1 1 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 1

Question # 02 [CLO 02 PLO 02 C 02] Marks: 15x02= 30

a. In a system an analog signal is digitized such that the sampling rate is 44.1 kilo samples/second. The peak signal
power to peak quantization noise power ratio should be at least 96dB.
1. Calculate the number of quantization levels required.
2. How many bits/sample are required for the number of quantization levels calculated in part (1)?
3. Calculate the resulting Data Rate and Signal Bandwidth for PCM transmission of data.

b. For a digital system, an analog signal with maximum frequency of 25000 Hz is digitized so that the sampler uses the
Nyquist rate to sample the signal. The required data rate is 500,000 bits/second. In order to check if the system is
working fine Peak signal power to average quantization noise power is measured that turned out to be 45dB.
Identify if this system is working fine and indicate if there is any problem with this system. Recommend any changes
to make this system work. Support your answer with mathematical calculations.
