Chapter 2

The domains and ranges of inverse trigonometric functions are defined. The principal value of an inverse trig function is the value that lies within its principal value branch. Some key inverse trigonometric function identities are: 1) sin(sinx) = x 2) cos(cos-1y) = y 3) tan(tan-1x) = x

INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS 53

Sumary
The domains and ranges (principal value branches) of inverse trigonometric
functions are given in the following table:
Functions Domain Range
(Principal ValueBranches)
y= sin -1, 1]|
y= cos r -1, 1] [0,
cOsec-! R-1,1)

y= sec x R I , 1) (0, T]

y= tanx R

y = cotx R (0, T)

sin'x should notbe confused with (sin x)'. In fact (sin x)= Sin x
and

similarly for other trigonometric functions.

The value of an inverse trigonometric functions which lies in its principal
value branch is called the principal value of th¡t inverse trigonometric
functions.
For suitable values of domain, we have
y= sinxx= sin y X Siny y = sin x
Sin (sinx)=x sin (sin x) =x

Sin COsec x cos )=T cosx

cos secx cot (-)=1 cot

tan cot sec -x) = T- secx
