Time : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 100


Part A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

Answer ALL Questions

1. Write the Dirichlet’s conditions for a Fourier Series.

2. If f(x) =x2, in   ,   , find the root mean Square value of f(x).

3. Find the nature of the Partial differential equation4𝑢 + 4𝑢 +𝑢 + 2𝑢 − 𝑢 = 0.


4. An insulated rod of length 60 cm has its ends at A and B maintained at 20°C and 80°C
respectively. Find the steady state solution of the rod.

5. Write the sufficient condition for existence of Laplace Transform of f (t).

6. Write the initial and final value theorem of Laplace Transformation.

7. State Fourier Integral theorem.

8. If F(s) is the Fourier transform of f(x) then show that F[f(x) cosax] = [ F (s+a) + F(s-a) ].

11. a) i) Expand 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥(2𝜋 − 𝑥) as Fourier Series in (0,2𝜋). (8)

ii) Find the Fourier Series expansion of period 2𝑙 for the function 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑙 − 𝑥) (8)
in the range (0, 2𝑙).

b) i) Expand 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 , (0, 𝜋) in Fourier cosine Series. (8)

12. a) i) A tightly stretched flexible string has its ends fixed at x = 0 and x = l. At time (8)
t = 0, the string is given a shape defined by f(x) = kx2 (l-x), where k is a
constant and then released from rest. Find the displacement of any point x of the
string at any time t > 0.
ii) Solve the boundary value problem: = 𝛼 with conditions u  0,t   0, 4. (8)

b) i) A tightly stretched string with fixed ends points x = 0 & x = l is initially at rest (8)
