Torsion Problem 1

This document provides calculations to determine seismic shears in storeys of a 4-storey reinforced concrete building located in seismic zone IV. It includes data on member sizes, building dimensions, material properties, and seismic weights. Calculations are shown for fundamental period, design base shear, seismic forces and shears at each floor considering effects of mass and stiffness eccentricities. Torsional moments and shears are determined for each column line in the X and Y directions. Tables are provided summarizing seismic shear forces and torsional shears at each floor.

Solution:
Calculations of seismic weights

(i) Total weight of columns in a storey

= 27x 3 x 0.4 x 0.6 x 24
= 466.6 kN
(ii) Total weight of beams in a storey
= [(22 x 6 x 0.25 x 0.50) + (20 x 5 x 0.25 x 0.40)] x 24

1
= 636.0 kN
(iii) Total weight of slab in a storey
= (12 x 20 + 24 x 10) x 0.15 x 24
= 1728 kN
(iv) Total weight of walls in a storey
= (12 + 10 +24 + 10 +36 +20) x 0.25 x 3 x 20
= 1680 kN
(v) Live load on each floor
= (12 x 20 + 24 x 10) x 3 x 0.25
= 360 kN
(vi) Lumped weight at floor 1, 2 and 3
= 466.6 + 636.0 + 1728 + 1680 + 360
= 4870.56 kN
(vii) Lumped weight at roof floor
= 466.6 + 636.0 + 1728 + 1680
= 4510.56 kN
(viii) Total weight of building
= 3X4870.56 + 4510.56
= 19122.24 kN
