Title: Mathematics Form 1

This document provides instruction on calculating perimeters and areas of different shapes: (1) It defines perimeter as the total distance around the outer edge of a figure and provides examples of calculating perimeters of different shapes. (2) It also defines area as the measurement of the amount of surface covered and provides examples of calculating areas of rectangles and composite figures using length x width. (3) Several examples and practice problems are provided for students to calculate perimeters and areas of various shapes.

AREA PERIMETER

exercise
AREA PERIMETER

DEFINITION
Perimeter : the total distance around the outer edge of a figure.
W X

The perimeter of the figure on the right is : WX + XY + YZ + ZW

PERIMETER
Ahmad owns a piece of land. He wants to put a fence around it. He measures the land and records the length of each border. The sum of length around the border of the land is called parameter.

EXAMPLE
Example 1 : Find the perimeter of the diagram :
P 5cm Q 5cm S R

SOLUTION : Perimeter of PQRS = 5+5+5+5 = 20

EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE 2 : Find the perimeter of the diagram :

K 8cm N

12c m

L M

SOLUTION : Perimeter KLMN = 12+8+12+8 = 40 cm

To solve problems involving perimeters

Example 3 : Find the perimeter of the shaded region in the diagram :
K 5c m N 12c m 13cm 5c m P 4c m L Q 3cm M

Solution: LQ = 5-3 = 2cm NP = 12-4 = 8cm perimeter of shaded area: = LN + NP + PQ + QL = 13 + 8 + 5 + 2 = 28cm

Application of perimeter
Mohd Azri owns a piece of land. It has four sides which measure 55m, 62m, 54m and 65m. He wants to fence the land. If the fence costs RM7 per metre, how much must he spend to fence the land.

PROBLEMS :

SOLUTION
Steps to solve problem :
1.

Understand the problem :

Land measurement: 55m, 62m, 54m, and 65m Price of fence : RM7 per metre Find how much money is needed to fence the land.

2. Decide on a strategy : Add and multiply 3.Carry out the strategy : Perimeter = 55 + 62 + 54 + 65 = 236m Cost of fence= 236 x 7 =RM 1652

Answer : Mohd Azri must spend RM 1652 to fence the land 4. Check the answer : 1652 / 7 = 236

AREA
The measurement of the amount of surface covered.

AREA OF RECTANGLES

The simplest way to measure an area is to place it over square grids. The figure on the right is a square with each side measuring 1 unit. This square has an area of 1 square unit. 1 square unit can be written as 1 unit2. 1 unit 1 unit AREA=1 UNIT2

Find the area ( in square units ) of the leaf in the diagram below

Each complete square has an area of 1 unit2. An incomplete square that is more or equal to half is rounded off to 1 unit2. An incomplete square that is less than half is not counted.

EXAMPLE 4 :
Find the area of the shaded region : If the area of each circle is 1 unit2. SOLUTION : Area = 19 1 = 19 unit2.

TO FIND THE AREA OF A RECTANGLE :

Look at the diagram below.Diagram A is a unit square.

1 unit 1 unit

Diagram A

Diagram B is a rectangle 5 units long and 4 units wide.

Length= 5 units

Width=4 units

Diagram B

20 unit squares are required to cover the whole rectangle in Diagram B. Therefore, area of Diagram B = 20 unit2. Since there are 5 unit square in a row, we have 5 4 = 20 unit squares in 4 rows.

AREA OF A RECTANGLE = LENGTH X WIDTH ( BREADTH)

Problem involving areas

Find the area of each rectangle in cm2
12 cm 3.5 m 14 cm

a)

b)

2m

solution a) Area = length x breadth = 14 x 12 = 168 cm2 b) change m to cm 3.5 m = 3.5 x 100 = 350cm 2m area = 2 x 100 = 200 cm = 350 x 200 =700000cm2

Example : Find the area of the below figure :

2 cm 3cm 4cm 1cm 6 cm

9 cm

Solution Can be divided into 3 rectangles A, B and C Area of rectangle A = 3 x 4 = 12 cm2 Area of rectangle B = 4 x 3 = 12 cm2 Area of rectangle C = 2 x 6 = 12 cm2 Therefore, the area of the figure is 12 + 12 + 12 = 29 cm2

A small rectangle has been cut out from the rectangular cardboard below. Find the perimeter of the remaining cardboard : 8 cm Perimeter of the remaining cardboard

= (2 x 8 + 2 x 12 + 2 x 3)
12 cm

= (16 + 24 + 6) cm
3 cm

= 24 cm

Find the perimeter of the figure:

8 cm The perimeter of the figure = (4 x 8 + 8 x 3) cm = (32 + 24) cm = 56 cm

3 cm

Perimeter of a Triangle
7 cm 7 cm

Perimeter of The Triangle

=a

+ b +c
5 cm + 7 cm

5 cm

= 7 cm + = 19 cm

Find the perimeter of the figures.
