MX7000 PSU Firmware Update Release Notes

1. The PSU firmware update process requires placing the chassis in the off state, performing a MM reset, selecting the PSU firmware DUP file, and monitoring the job queue for completion of the update. 2. During the PSU firmware update, the health LED on each PSU will flash for 45-120 seconds before the PSU resumes normal operation with the updated firmware. 3. Do not remove or power cycle any PSUs or the chassis itself while a firmware update is in progress, as this could cause the updating PSU to become non-functional.

Release Notes

PSU firmware update must be performed on a single chassis at a time.

In the case of an MCM configuration, each chassis will need to be
accessed and updated individually.

Required Firmware
To perform a PSU firmware update, the following items are required:
1. OpenManage Enterprise Modular v1.00.10 or greater available
through the Dell support site
2. PSU Firmware DUP

PSU Firmware Update

Follow the steps below to update the PSU firmware.
1. Turn the chassis OFF
a. Via racadm
i. Log into the chassis console and execute a power down
command:
racadm chassisaction powerdown
b. Through the MM GUI
i. Log into the Chassis GUI
ii. On the home page select Power Control → Power Off
When the chassis is in standby the GUI will show that the chassis
power state is Off
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: It is imperative that the chassis is in the Off state prior to
starting the PSU firmware update process. If the chassis is not Off
when the PSU firmware update job is created, the job will fail, and
the PSUs will not be updated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Perform a racreset or failover on the MM
a. Via racadm
i. Log into the chassis console and execute a racreset
command:
racadm racreset
b. Through the MM GUI
i. Log into the chassis GUI
ii. On the home page select More Actions → Failover
3. Once the failover or reset is complete, log back into the MM GUI
4. Select the DUP for PSU firmware update
a. In the MM GUI, go to the Firmware tab
b. Select Update Firmware
c. In the new dialog box that opens, select Individual Package
d. Click Browse and navigate to the location of the PSU
firmware DUP
e. Select the DUP and wait for it to be uploaded to the MM
During this process, the MM will also determine which PSUs
match the firmware DUP and will populate them in the
firmware update window
f. Once the list of PSUs is populated, click the checkbox next
to COMPLIANCE to select all PSUs
g. Click the Finish button. This will schedule the PSU
Firmware update for immediate execution
h. A dialog box will open stating, "Warning: This operation
will forcefully reboot the selected device(s). Do you want
to continue? YES NO"
i. Click YES to start the PSU firmware update job
5. The PSU firmware update job will appear in the Job Queue under
Monitor → Jobs as a firmware update job that is running and enabled
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: If a user observes the chassis during the update process, they
will see the following sequence of events executed on each PSU that is
updated:
1. DC LED is turned off
2. Health LED flashes quickly for 45 to 120 seconds
3. Health and AC LEDs will turn off (no LEDs on) and then turn back on
4. DC LED turns on, indicating that the PSU is supplying power to the
chassis
The entire process takes approximately 150 seconds per PSU being
updated. If all 6 PSUs in the chassis are updated, the process will
take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Warning: Do not remove a PSU from the chassis or completely remove AC
from the chassis while the PSU firmware update is in progress. Doing
so will cause the PSU that is being updated to become non-functional.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
6. After the PSU Firmware update is complete, perform a failover or
reset of the MM to ensure that the PSU firmware version is
updated in the MM GUI
7. The firmware version of the PSU can be checked in racadm or the
MM GUI
a. To view the firmware version in racadm
i. Log into the chassis console and execute a swinventory
command
racadm swinventory
b. To view the firmware version in the MM GUI
i. Log into the MM Chassis inventory
ii. From the chassis home page go to the Hardware tab and
click the Installed Software button
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: There will be no indications in the MM GUI during the PSU
firmware update process other than the running job in the Jobs
monitor. The PSU firmware update process will start with the first
matching PSU and proceed through all matching PSUs in the chassis. As
the PSU firmware update is completed on each PSU, an alert will be
generated indicating that the PSU firmware update has completed
successfully on that PSU. Once All PSUs have been updated, the job
will show that it has completed successfully.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: Other observations and caveats pertaining to PSU firmware
update:
1. The LCD screen will state that it is OK to remove AC or PSUs from
the chassis while it is in the off state. DO NOT completely remove AC
from the chassis or remove the PSU from the chassis while it is being
updated as this may render the PSU being updated non-functional
2. If the chassis is turned on prior to the PSU firmware update
completing, the MM will complete the update on the current PSU, but no
others in the chassis. This may cause instability requiring a chassis
AC cycle or MM restart before the PSU update can be run again
3. All PSUs that match the device ID called out in the DUP will be
updated. Individual PSUs cannot be updated individually at this time
