Bracket Model - Random Response

This document describes using a bracket model previously analyzed with modal frequency response to perform a random response analysis. A large mass is rigidly attached to nodes at the center of a circular hole to apply base acceleration loading defined by a power spectral density function. The model is analyzed using the modal method to obtain the random acceleration response at a node on top of the bracket. After completing the analysis, the acceleration power spectral density at the desired node is plotted to view the results.

Model Description:
In this example, the bracket model previously used for modal frequency response (bracket model) will be used, but with different boundary conditions, and a random analysis will be performed to obtain the random response to the loading applied in this example. To continue, you will need to have completed the Bracket Model - Modal Frequency example detailed above. The steps below describe how to read, edit, analyze and postprocess the model. It is desired to obtain the acceleration response of the structure due to an enforced base motion in the z-direction, described by a power spectral density (see below). The modal method will be used with a large mass rigidly attached to the edge of the circular hole. The response at node number 56 (at the top of the slot) is desired. Critical damping of 5% is assumed. The applied autospectra of the base acceleration is as follows:

Exercise Procedure: 1. Start MSC/NASTRAN for Windows 3.0.2 by double-clicking on the MSC/NASTRAN for Windows icon.
When the Open Model File dialog box appears; select bckt_frq.mod from the previous example. This is a database containing the model to be analyzed in this example.

File name: Open

The basic modeling data is complete (nodes, elements, element properties, material properties) except that different loading and constraint conditions are to be applied. If the model does not already appear on your view screen, do the following:

View/Select... Model Style: OK 2. Delete all current loading and constraint sets in the model by selecting. Delete/Model/Load - Set... Select All OK Yes Delete/Model/Constraint - Set... Select All OK Yes View/Regenerate (Ctrl+G) q Draw Model

Your view screen should look similar to the following:

Create the applied loading.

The base motion of the random analysis is represented using a power spectral density function, applied to the node points at the edge of the circular hole. In fact, the edge nodes are rigidly attached to a node located at the center of the hole to which the base acceleration load is applied using the large mass method. Quite simply, large loads are applied to the large mass to obtain the desired enforced base accelerations. The first step is to create a function of the applied power spectral density (autospectra ob base excitation).

Note that the table finishes with constant values of 0.1. MSC/NASTRAN for Windows interpolates and extrapolates between table values. This is required to ensure that the applied loading returns to a value of 0.1. Graphically verify the loading function.

Create the large mass and dynamic solution data.

Define the new load.

Model/Load/Set... Title: OK
The large mass will be defined at the center of the circular hole, and will connect to the nodes around the edge of the circular hole. The underlying geometry can be used to position the large mass at the center of the hole (there is a geometric point already placed there).

Dynamic Loading

Model/Load/Dynamic Analysis... Solution Method: q Modal Frequency

What will be required next is the position of the large mass at the center of the hole, and the nodes that it should connect to.

Enforced Motion...
Pick the Select Point icon on the top icon bar.

Pick the center of the hole from the graphics screen.

This locates the large mass, and a node point is automatically created in that position.

OK
You are then required to select the nodes to which the large mass will connect (the nodes around the edge of the circular hole). NOTE: Holding down the Control key and hold-left-click (mouse button) will create a circular capture window.

Hold Ctrl-key, hold-left-click and capture all the edge nodes of the hole.

OK
You are then requested to fill in the base acceleration data.

To clean up the view at this stage, the geometry can be turned off in the Quick View Options menu. A representation can be seen for the mass element and its rigid connection to the surrounding edge nodes.

Hit Ctrl+Q. Geometry Off Done

There are no constraints that need to be applied, so with the successful completion of the random loading, damping, large mass and solution frequency data, the model is now ready for analysis.
