Naming - Chapter

This document discusses naming simple binary compounds and acids. It describes three types of binary compounds: Type I are ionic compounds of metals and nonmetals, Type II are transition metal ionic compounds, and Type III are covalent compounds of nonmetals. It provides examples of compounds for each type and notes on naming compounds containing oxygen. The document also discusses naming acids, distinguishing between acids without oxygen, which use the suffix -ic, and acids with oxygen (oxoacids), which use the suffixes -ic or -ous depending on whether the anion ends in -ate or -ite.

Chemical Nomenclature
Acids

1- Without oxygen: The acid is named with the prefix hydro- and the suffix -ic if the anion ends in -ide
(Hydro…… ic acid)

1- With oxygen (oxyanions):

-The suffix –ic is added to the root name if the anion name ends in –ate
-The suffix –ous is added to the root name if the anion name ends in -ite

Dr. Rawan Khalaf, Dept. of Chemistry, An-Najah National University

(Hydro…….ic acid)

Anion Corresponding acid

F- (Fluoride) HF: hydrofluoric acid
Cl- (Chloride) HCl: hydrochloric acid
Br- (Bromide) HBr: hydrobromic acid
I- (Iodide) HI: hydroiodic acid
CN- (Cyanide) HCN: hydrocyanic acid
S2- (Sulfide) H2S: hydrosulfuric acid
