Mechanics Course (Statics - Sheet 1)

The document contains 9 problems involving determining the magnitude and direction of resultant forces given various force configurations and component forces. The problems involve calculating angles between forces, components of forces, and magnitudes of forces to satisfy given conditions about the resultant force.

Sheet 1

1. If Ɵ = 60 and F = 450 N, determine the magnitude of the resultant force and its direction,
measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis.

Figure 1

2. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force FR = F1 + F2 and its direction, measured
clockwise from the positive u axis.

Figure 2

3. The plate is subjected to the two forces at A and B as shown. If Ɵ = 60, determine the
magnitude of the resultant of these two forces and its direction measured clockwise from the
horizontal.

4. Force F acts on the frame such that its component acting along member AB is 650 lb, directed
from B towards A, and the component acting along member BC is 500 lb, directed from B
towards C. Determine the magnitude of F and its direction Ɵ. Set Ø = 60.

5. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force, FR measured counterclockwise
from the positive x axis. Solve the problem by first finding the resultant
F ' = F1 + F2 and then forming FR = F ' + F3.

6. Two forces act on the screw eye. If F1 = 400 N and F2 = 600 N, determine the angle Ɵ
(Ɵ= 0:180) between them, so that the resultant force has a magnitude of FR = 800 N.

Figure 6
7. If F1 = 30 lb and F2 = 40 lb, determine the angles Ɵ and Ø so that the resultant force is directed
along the positive x axis and has a magnitude of FR = 60 lb.

Figure 7

8. Determine the magnitude of force F so that the resultant FR of the three forces is as small as
possible. What is the minimum magnitude of FR?

9. If the resultant force of the two tugboats is required to be directed towards the positive x axis,
and FB is to be a minimum, determine the magnitude of FR and FB and the angle Ɵ.
