Problem Set Projectiles

This document contains 10 physics problems involving projectile motion with varying initial velocities, angles, heights, distances, and times. The problems require calculating values such as time of flight, horizontal distance, peak height, and velocities given some set of initial conditions for objects moving under gravity such as pool balls, soccer balls, darts, footballs, rockets, cannonballs, long jumpers, and grenades.

1) A pool ball leaves a 0.60-meter high table with an initial horizontal velocity of 2.4 m/s.

Predict the time required for the pool ball to fall to the ground and the horizontal
distance between the table's edge and the ball's landing location.
2) A soccer ball is kicked horizontally off a 22.0-meter high hill and lands a distance of 35.0
meters from the edge of the hill. Determine the initial horizontal velocity of the soccer
ball.
3) A dart is thrown horizontally with an initial speed of 10 m/s toward point P, the bull's-
eye on a dart board. It hits at point Q on the rim, vertically below P, 0.2 s later. What is
the distance PQ? How far away from the dart board is the dart released?
4) A football is kicked with an initial velocity of 25 m/s at an angle of 45-degrees with the
horizontal. Determine the time of flight, the horizontal distance, and the peak height of
the football.
5) A rocket is fired at a velocity of 80 m/s from the ground level at an angle of 50 degrees
above the horizontal. The rocket is fire toward an 10 m high wall, which is located 20 m
away. By how much does the rocket clear the top of the wall?
6) Two cannonballs, A and B, are fired from the ground with identical initial speeds, but
with launch angle of cannonball A larger than the launch angle of cannonball B.
(a) Which cannonball reaches a higher elevation?
(b) Which cannonball stays longer in the air?
(c) Which cannonball travels farther?
7) A long jumper leaves the ground with an initial velocity of 12 m/s at an angle of 28-
degrees above the horizontal. Determine the time of flight, the horizontal distance, and
the peak height of the long-jumper.
8) The highest barrier that a projectile can clear is 14 m, when the projectile is launched at
an angle of 30.0 degrees above the horizontal. What is the projectile's launch speed?
9) A balloon having 20 m/s constant velocity is rising from ground to up. When the balloon
reaches 160 m height, an object is thrown horizontally with a velocity of 40m/s with
respect to balloon. Find the horizontal distance travelled by the object.
10) In an action film hero is supposed to throw a grenade from his car, which is going
90.km/h, to his enemy's car, which is going 110 km/h. The enemy's car is 15.8 m in front
of the hero's when he lets go of the grenade. If the hero throws the grenade so its initial
velocity relative to him is at an angle of 45(degree) above the horizontal, what should
the magnitude of the initial velocity be? The cars are both traveling in the same
direction on a level road. Ignore air resistance.
Find the magnitude of the velocity both relative to the hero and relative to the earth
