Lab 13 Web

The document discusses examples of how design considerations for recall and recognition are implemented in commonly used software and websites. It provides instances such as "Remember Me" options for logging in, autocomplete form fields, search autocomplete features, tagging and location suggestions on Facebook, and how password managers integrate with browsers. Overall the examples demonstrate how recall and recognition aids are used to enhance the user experience for tasks like filling out forms, searching, retrieving past actions and settings, and selecting login credentials.

Find instances of designing for recall and recognition in software you use regularly, website requiring
form filling often good source of examples

When designing software or interacting with websites, there are often instances where considerations for
recall and recognition play a crucial role in the user experience. Here are some examples:

Username and Password Recall:

Scenario: Logging into an online service or application.

Design Consideration: Many platforms offer a "Remember Me" option, allowing users to recall their
username and password for future logins without having to type them each time.

Autocomplete for Form Fields:

Scenario: Filling out forms on websites.
Design Consideration: Some websites implement autocomplete features for form fields, making it easier
for users to fill in repetitive information (e.g., address, credit card details) by recalling previously entered
data.
Google Search:

Recognition:
Google Search's autocomplete feature suggests search queries based on what users start typing. This helps
users recognize and select from commonly searched terms, reducing the effort needed to type the full
query.

Recall:
Previous search queries are stored and displayed when users start typing a similar query. This aids in
recalling past searches and saves users from retyping frequently used queries.
Facebook:
Recognition: When tagging friends or adding locations in photos, Facebook suggests names and locations
based on the user's friends list and geographical data. This helps users recognize and select the correct
entities quickly.

Recall:
Facebook's search bar allows users to recall and navigate to friends' profiles, pages, or groups by typing
keywords, providing a quick way to access specific content.
Gmail:
Recognition: Gmail uses labels and tabs to categorize emails, making it easy for users to recognize and
navigate through different types of messages without recalling specific search criteria.

Recall:
The search functionality in Gmail is powerful, allowing users to recall emails based on keywords, sender,
date, and other criteria, supporting efficient retrieval of information.

Password Managers (e.g., LastPass, 1Password):

Recognition:
Password managers often integrate with browsers to recognize login forms. Users can recognize and
select the appropriate login credentials from the password manager's vault.

Recall:
Users don't need to recall complex passwords; the password manager automatically fills in login
credentials, enhancing both security and convenience.

Recognition:
Auto-suggest Usernames:
As users start typing their desired username, the system could recognize and suggest available options or
alert users if the chosen username is already in use. This aids in recognizing and selecting a unique
username without the need to recall the availability
Recall:
Previous Choices: If the website offers customization options (e.g., theme preferences, themes, notification
settings), the form could recall and pre-fill these choices based on the user's previous selections, creating a
personalized and consistent experience.
