ch2 Part2

1. The document provides recommendations for lighting levels, UGR values, and color temperatures for various interior spaces and tasks. 2. Spaces are grouped into categories like general building areas, agriculture buildings, bakeries, and foundries with recommended illuminance levels from 50 to 1500 lux. 3. UGR values range from 16 to 28 depending on the task, with precision work requiring lower UGR, and color temperatures range from 4000K to 6500K.

Chapter Two Interior Lifting Design

Unified Glare Rating (UGR)

[ ∑ ]

Where:
Lb: background luminance (cd/m2),
L: luminance of the luminous parts of each luminaire in the direction of the
observer’s eye (cd/m2),
: solid angle of the luminous parts of each luminaire at the observer’s eye
(steradian),
p: position index for each individual luminaire which relates to its
displacement from the line of sight

2-5 Design and Calculation Methods for Interior Lighting:-

2-5-1 Lighting Calculation Methods:-
The internal lighting in buildings is calculated according to one of the
following two systems:
 General lighting for all the place or horizontal
 General lighting in the place in addition to focused (spot) lighting on
the workplace
The first system is generally used if the required level of illumination is
appropriate, that is, not too high. As the lighting of the place at this level will
be prohibitively expensive, and in this case the second system is used where
the place is illuminated at a certain (specified) level and the workplaces are
illuminated with central lighting at a high level suitable for the work
performed in these places.
The level of illumination in either of the two systems is selected
according to the following table:

38 Lecturer:
Dr. Habeeb J. Nekad
Chapter Two Interior Lifting Design

Illumination General General Lighting & Focused

Level Lighting only Lighting (lux)
(lux) General Focused
Very poor 30 ----- -----
Poor 60 ----- -----
Medium 120 250 20
High 250 500 40
Very high 600 1000 80
Super high ----- 4000 300

2-5-2 Average Illuminance on Horizontal Plane:-

The practical illumination that is provided to a horizontal plane located
in an indoor place by means of rows of lighting structures installed above that
level depends on each of the following:
 Number of lamps
 Luminous flux of those lamps
 Lighting installations characteristics
 Dimensions of the place located in the horizontal plane
 The reflections from the surfaces of that place
 Maintenance Level
2-5-3 Factors affecting interior lighting design:
 The level of illumination required according to the type of use of the
place
 The lighting systems used according to the type of use of the place
 The nature of the site, the colors of the walls and ceilings, the area and
proportions of the surface to be illuminated, and the finishing materials
 Choosing the types of lamps and the level of installation of lighting
structures
 Distribution of lighting installations
 Glare levels
 Levels of color discrimination of objects inside the place

39 Lecturer:
Dr. Habeeb J. Nekad
Chapter Two Interior Lifting Design

2-5-4 Interior Lighting Design Steps:

a) Taking into account the nature of the use of the place, the following
shall be determined:
 Required level of illuminance
 lighting distribution systems
 Types of lamps and lighting fixtures
b) The room index (RI) is determined according to the dimensions of the
place and the level of suspension of lighting structures, as well as
according to the systems used in the distribution of lighting, based on
the tables of standard specifications.
c) The utilization factor (UF) for lighting installation is determined
according to the type of installation, the room index, and the light
reflection factor on the ceiling and walls, based on the standard
specification tables.
d) The maintenance factor (MF) for lighting installation is determined
according to the nature of the site. Its value ranges from 0.76 to 1 in the
case of regular periodic maintenance, while its value ranges from 0.66
to 0.75 In case of irregular maintenance.
e) The number of lighting fixtures (N) required is calculated from the
following equation:

2-6 Conditions and Criterions of Efficient Interior Lighting:-

 Power and time
 Energy saving devices
 Electrical energy goals for lighting
