PS3 Heat Transfer by Convection

The document is a problem set from a Heat and Mass Transfer course that contains 4 problems requiring calculations related to heat exchangers. Problem 1 requires calculating the mass of benzene that can be heated through concentric pipes using two flow configurations. Problem 2 requires calculating the exit water temperature and steam mass flow rate in a double pipe heat exchanger. Problem 3 requires calculating the length of a double pipe heat exchanger needed for two flow configurations to cool an organic liquid between two temperatures. Problem 4 requires calculating the cyclohexane mass flow rate that can be condensed in a vertical condenser of a given length.

A. Determine the appropriate formula for h by giving the Eqn. no. from Perry’s 9th Edition, given the
following conditions below:

Equation
Conditions:
No.

1. Forced convection: for fully developed turbulent flow where 0.7 < Pr < 16,700, ReD < Eqn 5.57 (p.
10,000, and L/D > 10 5-9)

2. Forced convection: for fully developed flow in the transition region between laminar and Eqn 5.55 (p.
turbulent flow, and for fully developed turbulent flow where 0.5 < Pr < 105, 3000 < ReD < 5-9)
106

3. Natural Convection: for a horizontal rectangular cavity heated from below, the onset of Eqn 5.49 (p.
advection requires RaL > 1708 5-8)

4. For film type condensation in vertical tubes: For a Reynolds number < 30, the average Eqn 5.79 (p.
Nusselt number for laminar condensate films is 5-11)

5. For Bank of tubes: The heat-transfer coefficient increases from row 1 to about row 5 of Eqn 5.73 (p.
the tube bank. The average Nusselt number for a tube bank with fewer than 10 rows 5-11)

6. For fully developed turbulent flow of liquid metals, the Nusselt number depends on the Eqn 5.58 (p.
wall boundary condition. For a constant wall temperature 5-9)

7. For natural convection: For laminar and turbulent flow on isothermal, horizontal cylinders Eqn 5.43 (p.
of diameter D, 5-8)

8. For external flows for a single cylinder in cross flow. Eqn 5.63 (p.
5-10)

9. For non-evaporating falling films: For laminar flow (Reδ < 20–30) Eqn 5.74 (p.
5-11)

10. For external flows: The average Nusselt number for turbulent flow over a smooth, Eqn 5.67 (p.
isothermal flat plate of length x is given by 5-10)

B. Answer what is being required in the following problems.

1. Benzene is heated inside concentric pipes made of 1 inch and ½ inch sch 40. from 35 to 60 oC by
4000 kg/hr of nitrobenzene at 80 oC. A value of Uo equal to 570 is expected. How much benzene
can be heated in 48 m of pipe if flow is a) counter-current flow b) co-current flow

2. A double pipe heat exchanger consists of a 2” Sch 40 steel pipe inside a 3inch Sch 40 steel pipe,
10 m long. Water at 25 oC flows at the rate of 100 kg/hr through the smaller pipe while steam at
120 kPa is condensing in the annulus. The water side heat transfer coefficient is 1,000 W/mK
while the steam side heat transfer coefficient is 20,000 W/mK. Find the exit temperature ( oC) of
the water and the mass flow rate of steam (kg/hr).

3. It is desired to cool an organic liquid from 65 oC to 40oC using water as cooling medium. The
organic liquid shall enter 5m/s and at the average temperature its properties are: density = 810
kg/m3, viscosity = 1 cp, specific heat = 2.1 KJ/kg-K and thermal conductivity = 0.14 W/m-K. The

cooling water shall enter at 28oC and leave at 35oC. Suppose a double pipe heat exchanger
composed of 1 inch and 2 inch sch 40 Steel pipes are used. Determine the length of the
exchanger needed (m) for (a) counter-current flow (b) co-current flow.

4. A vertical condenser composed of ½” and 1.5” Std Steel pipes will handle cyclohexane vapor
condensing at 1 atm inside the small pipe. Assume water as the cooling medium at an average
temperature of 70oC and heat transfer coefficient of 3000 W/m 2-K. Assuming film type
condensation, what is the mass rate of cyclohexane if the exchanger is 1.5 m long?
