Rulebook

Global Sustainability Space Challenge 2022

I Topic of the Challenge and Challenge Rounds


1. The challenge will ask students to propose innovative, sustainable entrepreneurial solutions
aimed at the utilization of the space environment and/or space-based assets and data, with
an aim of bringing space economy to people and solving some of the most pressing
challenges humankind is currently facing.
2. The Challenge is divided into 5 separate tracks, each focusing on one or more Sustainable
Development Goals. Each of the tracks addresses a different area where sustainable
solutions are sought and each team can participate in one of the tracks.
3. The tracks are the following: Climate Action (SDG13); Sustainable Food & Agriculture
(SDG2); Life Science & Healthcare (SDG3); Sustainable Consumption and Supply Chains
(SDG12); and Sustainable Arts, Fashion and 3D Printing.
4. Projects must be within one of the challenge tracks. Each track has several inspirational
themes which will be described as background information on the webpage. It is acceptable
for participants to come up with a different theme, or an alternate take on any proposed
theme, yet their proposal must absolutely correspond to the overarching track they wish to
join.
5. There will be several rounds of the Challenge. In the first round, 10 proposals from each
track will be selected from all submissions and these proposals will advance to the second
round.
6. The second round of the Challenge will focus on further development of the initial
proposals that progressed to the second round. From these 10 proposals, 4 proposals from
each track will be announced as finalists (20 finalists total).
7. The finalists teams (20) will participate in the final pitching event after which the winners
will be announced.

II Duration of the Challenge and Official Timeline


8. The Challenge shall take place from 25-Aug-2022 to 21-Nov-2022.The Challenge will be
officially announced on 25-Aug-2022.
9. Registration of teams / individuals will be opened on 25-August 2022. All applications
should be made by using a dedicated application form found on the website.
10. Due date to submit all registrations is 19-Sep-2022, 23:59 CEST.
11. Before the end of the registration period, a first webinar on the introduction to the
Challenge will be held to all registered and prospective participants. During the webinar,
scope of the challenge, timeline, goals, and other important information will be presented
by the Organizers. Exact date of the webinar will be announced on the official webpage of
the Challenge.
12. Series of horizontal webinars on “why space” in the context of the different tracks will be
held for all registered participants after the registration deadline. These webinars will serve
as an introduction to the tracks and will give valuable guidance to teams on how to develop
their initial proposals.
13. Also matchmaking opportunities will be created so that individual registrants can find a
team around topics of interest.
14. Teams are required to submit a first idea of their project in the form of a two-pager, no later
than 01-Oct-2022, 23:59 CEST. The details about the first deliverable are elaborated on
in this rulebook (two-pager template included as Annex 1). The two-pager shall also
include the final team’s composition.
15. By 10-Oct-2022, 10 proposals from each track (50 proposals total) will be selected by the
Jury and deemed as semi-finalists. These 50 teams will continue in the Challenge and will
be responsible for developing a full proposal.
16. Mentorship and support services will be provided to the teams participating through the
second round of the Challenge.
17. Series of workshops for semi-finalists will take place in October, covering scientific,
engineering and business-related aspects.
18. Dedicated Hackathon will be held for the 50 semi-finalist teams from 29 to 30-Oct-2022,
to allow them to collaborate in real-time on finalizing their proposal idea, in interaction
with (horizontal / vertical) mentors present.
19. By 03-Nov-2022, 23:59 CEST, all full proposals must be submitted by semi-finalists for
the evaluation by a Jury. Teams are required to submit their full proposal of their project
in the form of a word or pdf document. The details about the final deliverable are elaborated
in this rulebook (Full proposal template included as Annex 2).
20. On 08-Nov-2022, 4 teams per each track (20 total) will be announced as finalists.
21. Between the finalists’ announcement and the final pitching event, mentoring will be
provided to the finalists in order to prepare them for the final pitching event.
22. Final Pitching Event for the selected 20 finalists will be held on 15-Nov- 2022.
23. Winners of the Challenge will be announced on 21-Nov-2022.

III Eligibility
24. This is an international Challenge and students from all countries are eligible to apply.
25. Teams of 4-6 students from all high-schools, accredited universities, polytechnics and
technical institutes are eligible to participate in the Challenge. The eligible age for
participation is 16-26 years.
26. Participants can register for the challenge either as an already formed team or as
individuals. In a case when an individual registers to join the challenge, matchmaking
opportunities will be created so he/she can find a team in the area of his/her interest and
preferred tracks.
27. Teams are required to be international, meaning that team members shall come from more
than one country.
28. Teams are required to be multi-disciplinary, meaning that team members shall represent
more than one discipline (engineering, science, arts, business, social sciences, humanities,
etc.). More multi-disciplinarity will be considered positive in the evaluation.
29. Employees of the Organizers or its affiliates, advertising or promotion agencies, those
involved in the production, development, implementation or handling of this Challenge,
any agents acting for, or on behalf of the above entities, their respective parent companies,
officers, directors, subsidiaries, affiliates, service providers, prize suppliers, any other
person or entity associated with Challenge and/or members of their immediate families
(spouses, children, siblings, parents) and/or persons living in the same household as such
persons, whether or not related, are ineligible to enter the Challenge.
30. The official language of the Challenge is English. All competition business including
registration, correspondence, and project submission, must be completed in English.
31. At least one student in each Team must speak English fluently, and that member must be
present at the final event in order to conduct their Team’s presentation, if they are selected
as a Finalist.

IV Registration and Submissions


32. Teams and individuals can register for the Challenge by submitting an application form
that can be found on the website. There are separate forms for the registration of already
formed teams and individual applicants.
33. In the application form for teams, applicants are required to provide their team’s name,
team contact details, names of all team members, their age, individual contact details, mini-
CV, and information on their studies. Furthermore, they must indicate their preferred and
backup Challenge track. If the team already has an idea about their project, they shall
include in the application form a basic information about their project.
34. In the application form for individuals, applicants are required to provide their name,
contact information, mini-CV, and information on the preferred and backup Challenge
track the individual wishes to join. If the participant already has an idea about their project,
(s)he shall submit basic information about it.
35. The Organizers reserve the right in their sole discretion to disqualify any entry at any time
which, in the Organizers’ reasonable opinion, endangers the safety or well-being of any
person, or in the event it is determined that the student and/or his/her parent/legal guardian
have not complied with these Official Rules. In addition to the Organizers’ right to do so
at their discretion, the judges will also be instructed to disqualify any entry that describes
dangerous conduct, stunts or tricks, conduct that could lead to physical injury, property
damage or otherwise violates or is inconsistent with these Official Rules.
36. Teams are required to submit a first deliverable (two-pager) with details and initial idea of
their project by the end of the submission deadline, as indicated in the official Challenge
timeline. The first deliverable must also contain information on the final and binding
composition of the team.
37. The first deliverable must consist of an outline of the project plan, and this outline must
also include details regarding methodologies, implementation approach, schedule,
software designs and risk management. The deliverable must absolutely correspond to the
selected track and rules described. (Template two-pager in Annex 1) The first deliverable
must be submitted in either DOC or PDF format. Submissions that fail to work or are not
understandable for any reason will result in the disqualification of the entry.
38. Teams selected as semi-finalists during the first selection will be informed by the
Organizers, and they proceed to the second round of the challenge. These semi-finalists
will be required to develop the first deliverable into a second deliverable (full proposal).
This proposal is to be submitted by the date as indicated in the official timeline of the
Challenge.
39. The second deliverable must consist of an outline of the project plan, and this outline must
also include details regarding methodologies, implementation approach, schedule,
software designs and risk management. The deliverable must absolutely correspond to the
selected track and rules described. (Template full-proposal in Annex 2). Second
deliverable must be submitted in either DOC or PDF format. Submissions that fail to work
or are not understandable for any reason will result in the disqualification of the entry.
40. Teams selected then as finalists will be requested to prepare a short video (maximum of 3
minutes) that summarizes and visualizes their proposal idea before the finale.
41. All submissions that are deemed by the Organizers or judges in their sole discretion to be
illegal, immoral, obscene, profane or not in keeping with Organizers’ values or reputation
will be disqualified.
42. By entering the Challenge, the student guarantees that the team’s proposal does not contain
confidential material, and that neither the student nor the parent or legal guardian is aware
of any conflicting rights in the submission or claims to the submission, including but not
limited to copyright, trade secret or other intellectual property right.
43. All forms of scientific fraud and misconduct are prohibited in all aspects of the Challenge,
including but not limited to plagiarism, data fabrication, and/or use/presentation of other
researchers’ work as one’s own. If a team uses copyrighted material, images, or videos
from a third party in their proposal or/ and presentation, they must provide permission and
authorization from the owners to use this material in advance.

V Selection of Semi-Finalists and Finalists


44. The Jury consisting of a panel of qualified judges selected by the Organizers, Promotional
Partners and their partner organizations will review all first deliverables from teams
participating in all five Challenge tracks after the submission deadline.
45. Based on the judging and scoring criteria determined by the Organizers, the Jury will select
ten (10) best from all proposals submitted under each Challenge track. Teams whose
proposals were selected by the Jury will be deemed semi-finalists. There will be a total
number of 50 semi-finalists.
46. In the second round, the Jury consisting of a panel of qualified judges selected by the
Organizers, Promotional Partners and their partner organizations will review the second
deliverables of all semi-finalists.
47. Based on the judging and scoring criteria determined by the Organizers, the Jury will select
four (4) best proposals from all proposals submitted under each Challenge track. Teams
whose proposals were selected by the Jury will be deemed finalists. There will be a total
number of 20 finalists.
48. The decisions of the Judges, with the approval of the Organizers, will be final. Judging
scores of semi-finalists and finalists will not be released to Teams. Under no circumstances
are taken into account factors relating to the person's appearance, religious or trade union,
political opinions or sexual orientation of the participants. The selections will not result in
any way, whether directly or indirectly, by chance or luck.

VII Final Pitch Event


49. The final stage of the Challenge is the Final Pitch Event. The Final Pitch Event is expected
to be held partially F2F in Qatar and partially virtual. More details will be issued timely.
The finale will be open to the general public.
50. It will consist of an oral presentation of the Projects by the 20 Teams selected for the Final
Pitch. These teams will have the opportunity to pitch their projects and demonstrate their
scientific knowledge and their business case.
51. Presentation materials including portable computing systems, presentation software,
storyboards and other visual aids are the responsibility of the team participating on the
Final Pitch. Any materials used must conform to competition specified standards.
52. Finalists will be judged by a panel of qualified judges selected by the Organizers,
Promotional Partners and their partner organizations, according to judging and scoring
criteria that will be provided to the finalists prior to the Final Event.
53. The judges will consider and give a rating on a scale from 0 to 10 (0 being no details
provided, 10 being exceptional detail provided) under the following categories:
a. Explanation of how the Team came up with their original idea. Clear explanations
and a demonstration of how well the problem and solution are understood by the
team;
b. Demonstrated scientific knowledge, providing details about the science behind the
new innovation or solution;
c. Demonstrated technical and business feasibility;
d. Demonstrated effect on enhancing sustainability
e. Creativity, ingenuity and innovative thinking (remember the idea must be a new
innovation or solution, and cannot simply be a behavioral change or a new use for
an existing product). Teams must provide an explanation of how their project could
have a broader reach or impact;
f. Clarity of the proposal;
g. Persuasiveness and effective communication
54. The decisions of the Judges, with the approval of the Organizers, will be final. Judging
scores will not be released to Teams. Under no circumstances are taken into account factors
relating to the person's appearance, religious or trade union, political opinions or sexual
orientation of the participants. The selections will not result in any way, whether directly
or indirectly, by chance or luck.
55. The Final Pitch Event will be accompanied by a public voting. In the Public Voting,
members of the public worldwide (the “Voters”) are invited to vote on one of the
announced finalists’ projects for each track. Voters will be asked to select the best finalist
project in accordance with the voting instructions posted. Results of the public voting are
valued at 20% of the overall score.
a. Limit of one vote per IP address per day will be applied during the Public Voting
Period.
b. Only votes submitted via the official website and in accordance with these Official
Rules during the Public Voting Period will be considered.
c. All determinations regarding the eligibility of votes will be made by the Organizers
in their sole discretion, and such determinations may be made at any time.
d. Votes generated by script, macro or other automated means or any other means
intended to impact the integrity of the voting process as determined by the
Organizers may be void.
e. Votes obtained by any fraudulent or inappropriate means, including, without
limitation, offering prizes or other inducements to members of the public, payment
for votes or offering to trade votes may result in those votes being void and the
associated finalist being disqualified.
56. The finalist from each Challenge track who scores the highest according to the judging
criteria will be deemed the Winner of the Track. Furthermore, the finalist who scored the
highest overall will be deemed the Absolute Winner of the Challenge. Winners per track
and absolute winners will be announced on 21-Nov-2022.
57. The decisions of the Judges are final and binding in all matters.

IX Prizes
58. There will be 5 prizes awarded in total, 1 overall Grand prize and 4 track winners. All
prizes will be announced on November 21, 2022.
59. Grand prize will be awarded to a team of absolute winners among all five Challenge tracks
based on the decision of a Jury and public voting during pitching.
60. Prizes consist of financial and non-financial support provided to the winners in order to
help them to execute their entrepreneurial solution.
61. Every Participant recognizes and accepts that the Awards cannot give rise to contesting of
any kind, to a request of delivery neither of their monetary exchange value, nor to their
replacement or exchange for another Awards, except for the decision of the Organizers due
to prize unavailability, safety or security considerations, or any other reason as solely
determined by the Organizers in which case a prize of comparable or greater value will be
awarded. The prizes are not transferable and the Participants are informed that the sale or
the exchange of the Awards is forbidden.

X Intellectual Property
62. Every Deliverable shall be considered as a collaborative work of all members of one team,
and shall remain the Participants' property. For avoidance of doubt, participation in the
Challenge shall not prevent any Participant from proceeding to any patent registration,
which will be under the Participant’s full responsibility and charge.

XI Adherence to the rules, Liability and other provisions


63. This challenge is subject to, and all Eligible Participants shall comply with, all applicable
federal, state and local laws and regulations.
64. Except where prohibited, Participants agree that any and all disputes, claims, and causes of
action arising out of or connected with this Challenge, or any prizes awarded, or the
determination of winners, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class
action, and exclusively by the appropriate court.
65. No responsibility or liability is assumed by the Organizers for technical problems or
technical malfunction arising in connection with any of the following occurrences which
may affect the operation of the Challenge: hardware or software errors; faulty computer,
telephone, television, cable, satellite, network, electronic, wireless or Internet connectivity
or other online communication problems; errors or limitations of any Internet service
providers, servers, hosts or providers; garbled, jumbled, or faulty data transmissions;
failure of any email transmissions to be sent to or received; lost, late, delayed, or intercepted
email transmissions; inaccessibility of the Website in whole or in part for any reason; traffic
congestions on the Internet or the Website; unauthorized human or non-human intervention
of the operation of the Challenge, including without limitation, unauthorized tampering,
hacking, theft, virus, bugs, worms; or destruction of any aspect of the Challenge, or loss,
miscount, misdirection, inaccessibility, or unavailability of an account used in connection
with the Challenge.
66. Participation in the Challenge and/or acceptance of a Prize constitutes permission for the
Organizers to use, without notice or further compensation, worldwide and in perpetuity,
any Eligible Participant’s Entry, photo, likeness, biographical information, statement, and
voice in any and all media for any purpose, including without limitation, advertising and
promotional purposes as well as in, on or in connection with the Website or the Challenge
or other promotions, and Eligible Participant hereby releases the Organizers from any
liability with respect thereto.
67. The Organizers reserve the right to cancel, shorten, suspend the Challenge without prior
notice: (a) In cases of force majeure; (b) If it appears that fraud has occurred in any form
whatsoever. The Organizers cannot be held responsible for cancellation or for suspension
of the Challenge according to the present Article and no allowance nor compensation will
be due to the Participants.
68. In the event of any discrepancy between the English language version of these Official
Rules and any other translated versions, abbreviated versions, or Challenge-related
advertising or disclosures, the English language version of these Official Rules shall
prevail.
69. The Organizers are not responsible for any typographical errors in the announcement of
any Prize or these Official Rules.
70. Participation in the Challenge constitutes the student’s full and unconditional agreement to
and acceptance of these Official Rules and the decisions of the Organizers and judges,
including but not limited to Organizers’ interpretations of these Official Rules.

Please describe how the activity will be addressed, the methodology to be used, including what models and analysis
will be used for achieving results, and the implementation of the workplan. Please also describe the required
analytical tools and supporting equipment, addressing your objectives.
The proposal should contain sufficient detail to enable a reviewer to make informed judgements about the overall
merit of the proposed activity and about the probability that the team will be able to accomplish their stated
objectives. In addition, the proposal should clearly indicate the relationship between the proposed work and the
matching track and theme(s) defined in this Global Sustainability Space Challenge.
The applicants are encouraged to describe any relevant previous and/or current activity supporting their proposal,
its successes and/or limitations.

5. Specific Objectives and Goals (not exceeding 2 pages)


Please describe which objectives and goals will be accomplished within the proposed activity. Specifically,
elaborate on the economic impact of the proposed activity, why do you consider it to be an innovation, and how
could humankind benefit from it.
6. Feasibility and Risk (not exceeding 3 pages)
Please discuss risk and feasibility of your activity. Please include high-level operational plan taking into account the
identified risks.

7. Duration/timeline of work and Preliminary Budget (not


exceeding 3 pages)

Please add a project plan, including schedule for planned meetings, milestones, and deliverables. Also include
preliminary budget.
