Seminar PPT - Swasti Aggarwal

Neuromorphic computing is a novel approach inspired by the human brain that uses artificial neurons and synapses to enable parallel processing and real-time learning. It has applications in edge AI, robotics, fraud detection, neuroscience research, computer vision, and speech/pattern recognition. The advantages include lower energy consumption, real-time decision making, and fault tolerance. Challenges include complexity in replicating brain behaviors and limited hardware/software. Recent research involves government institutions and companies like IBM and Intel developing neuromorphic technologies.

Introduction of Neuromorphic Computing

▪ Novel approach to computing that is inspired by the structure and

function of human brain.
▪ In the late 1980's to early 1990's, neuromorphic systems were
introduced.
▪ Crucial technology for the development of ai systems
▪ Neuromorphic systems are immersed in the deep learning to sense
and perceive skills used in, for example, speech recognition,
complex strategic games etc.
Inspiration from the Human brain

A complex organ that

manages nearly every aspect
of human body containing
from the physiological
functions and cognitive
abilities. It functions by
getting and sending signals via
neurons to ever part of the
human body.
The base idea is to create
hardware and software that
can process information same
as the human brain does.
Key Principles

▪ Take inspiration from the Human brain's structure and functionality.

▪ To accomplish parallel processing and real-time learning, it uses
artificial neurons and synapses.
▪ Very useful for the tasks like, pattern recognition and
sensory processing.
▪ If compared with quantum computing, it is logistically easier to
accomplish and also more energy efficient.
Applications of Neuromorphic Computing

• Edge artificial intelligence

• Robotics
• Fraud detection
• Neuroscience research
• Computer vision
• Speech and pattern
recognition
Advantages of Neuromorphic Computing

• Consumes less energy

• Can make decisions in
real-time
• Are fault-tolerant: can
function even if any of the
component fail
• Increased or decreased
according to the work at
that time
Disadvantages of Neuromorphic Computing

• Complexity: difficult in
exactly replicating the
specific behavior
• Can be used for
destruction
• Harmful for personhood
• Limited hardware and
software
• Can be of big-budget
Recent Research and Developments

▪ Many government institutions, various organizations, technical

companies including Intel labs and IBM are involved in the research
of neuromorphic computing.
▪ IBM Research Europe- Zurich is surveying the paradigm of
neuromorphic computing focusing on unique tactics.
▪ In a recent study, researchers from Purdue University, University of
California San Diego (USCD) and Ecole Superieure de Physique et
de Chimie Industrielles (ESPCI) in Paris, France, proposed a
hardware that mimics the synapses of the human brain.
