OSM LessonWS 4A03 3.0 Lite e

This document provides a lesson on factorizing polynomials and solving linear inequalities in one unknown. It includes examples of factorizing polynomials by extracting common factors, using identities like (x - y)(x + y), and the difference of squares and perfect square identities. Students are given practice problems factorizing 16 polynomials. It also reviews solving linear inequalities in one unknown by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing both sides by the same number and changing inequality signs if dividing by a negative number. Students are given 6 practice problems solving linear inequalities. The goal is for students to learn techniques for factorizing polynomials and solving one-variable linear inequalities.

Review
Factorization of Polynomials
Objective: Converting a polynomial into the product of its factors.
Method Example
(a) Extracting common factors x2 – 9x = x(x – 9)
x2 – 9 = x2 – 32
(b) Using the identity x – y  (x + y)(x – y)
2 2
= (x + 3)(x – 3)
(c) Using the identities
(i) x2 + 2xy + y2  (x + y)2 x2 + 4x + 4 = x2 + 2(x)(2) + 22
= (x + 2)2
(ii) x2 – 2xy + y2  (x – y)2 9x2 – 6x + 1 = (3x)2 – 2(3x)(1) + 12
= (3x – 1)2

(d) Cross-method x2 – x – 2 = (x – 2)(x + 1)
