L&T CONSTRUCTION MUMBAI COASTAL ROAD PKG 04

Name of Project : Mumbai Coastal Road Project Package -IV

Client : Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai
General Consultant : AECOM
PMC : Yooshin Engineering Corporation& Tec Cautro S.A
Contractor : L&T Construction
CONCRETE MIX DESIGN
GRADE - M20
Date: 30/03/2021
1 DESIGN STIPULATION :-
1.1 Grade of Concrete M 20 ( Secant Pile)
1.2 Type of cement : OPC 53 Grade
1.3 Nominal maximum Size of Aggregate : 20 mm
1.4 Type of exposure : Severe
1.5 Degree of Workability in terms of Slump
at Pouring Point : 175 ± 25 mm
1.6 Degree of Quality Control : Good
As per IS456
1.7 Minimum Cementatious content : 250 kg/Cum. ( Table 5 of IS 456)
1.8 Maximum Water/Cement ratio : 0.50 ( Table 5 of IS 456)
1.9 Maximum cement content : 450 kg/cum
2.0 Mode of Placement at site : Pump/ Direct Pour
2.1 Type of Coarse aggregate : Crushed
2.2 Type of fine aggregate : Crushed sand
2.3 Type of Chemical admixture : Superplasticizer

2.4 Source of Ingredients -

a. Cement : Ambuja OPC 53 grade Cement.
b. GGBS : JSW
c. Coarse Aggregates : Ulwe Hill
d. Crusher sand : Ulwe Hill
e. Water : Devanshi Logistic Co.
f. Superplasticizer : Chryso Optima K 940 EMX

2 TEST DATA FOR MATERIALS :-

1.1 Sieve analysis of Coarse & Fine aggregate
& All - in - aggregate (As per IS:383 – 2016)
1.2 Specific Gravity of materials
a. OPC Cement 3.15
b. GGBS 2.90
c. Coarse Aggregates - 20 mm 2.73
d. Coarse Aggregates - 10 mm 2.70
e. Crusher sand 2.68
f. Super plasticizer 1.108

1.3 Water absorption

a. Coarse Aggregates - 20 mm 1.95%
b. Coarse Aggregates - 10 mm 2.15%
c. Crusher sand 3.80%

3 Target Mean Strength of Concrete :-

a. f'ck= fck+1.65*S
20+1.65*4 26.60 N/mm2 (From IS 10262, 2019 table 2, Standard deviation, S = 5.0 N/mm 2)
b. f'ck= fck+X
20+5.5 25.50 N/mm2 (From IS 10262, 2019 table 1, Standard deviation, X = 6.5 N/mm 2)
The higher value is to be adopted. Therefore,target strength will be 26.60 N/mm 2 as 26.60 > 25.50 N/mm 2
4 Selection of Water/Cement ratio :-

From based on trials and experience, adopted water cementitious content ratio as 0.43

This is lower than the maximum value of 0.5prescribed for severe exposure for Plain concrete as per IS 456
0.50 > 0.43, hence O.K.
Therefore Water/Cement ratio 0.43

5 Selection of Water Content :-

From Table 4, water content = 186 kg (for 50mm slump ) for 20mm aggregate.
15*186
Estimated water content for 175 mm slump= 186+
100
= 213.9 kg
As superplasticizer is used, the water content may be reduced. Based on trial data, the water content reduction of 30.8 percent is considered while using plasticizer at
the rate 1.15 percentage by weight of cement.
Hence water content = 213.9 * 0.744
159.14 = 159 kg

# Sensitivity: LNT Construction Internal Use

6 Calculation of Cement content :-
159
Total Cementitious content : - = 370.097 kg
0.430
= 370 ( rounded off)
Minimum cementatious content for severe exposure condition for reinforced concrete as per IS 456 = 250 kg/cum
370 kg/cum > 250 kg/cum , hence O.K.

Considering Cement as 37.80 % of total cementitious content = 37.80% = 370*37.80/100

= 140 kg/cum

Considering GGBS as 62.20% of total cementitious content = 62.20% = 370*62.2/100

= 230 kg/cum
Therefore Total Cementitious Content :- = 370 Kg/Cum
7 Selection of Coarse & Fine aggregate :-
Selecting CA : FA ratio as 59:41 based on all in aggregate grading & proportion of 20 mm : 10 mm as 59:41 This is to be changed.

a. Volume of concrete = 1 cum Volume of entrapped air in concrete = 0.01cum ( As per IS 10262, 2019)
Therefore Vol. of concrete = .99 cum
b. Volume of cement = (Mass of cement / Specific gravity of cement) * (1 / 1000)
= (140/3.15)*(1/1000) = 0.044 cum.

c. Volume of GGBS = (Mass of GGBS/ Specific gravity of GGBS) * (1 / 1000)

= (230/2.90)*(1/1000) = 0.079 cum.

d. Volume of water = (Mass of Water / Specific gravity of water) * (1 / 1000)

= (159/ 1)*(1/1000) = 0.159 cum.
e. Volume of Superplasticizer @ 1.15% by mass of = (Mass of chemical admixture / Specific gravity of admixture)*(1 / 1000)
Cementitious material = (4.255/1.108)*(1/1000) = 0.004 cum.

f. Volume of all in aggregate = 0.99- (b+c+d+e+f)

= .99 - (0.044+.0.079+.159+0.004)
= 0.703 cum.

g. Mass of coarse aggregate = Vol. of all in Agg* % of CA* Specific Gravity of 20 mm Coarse Aggregate*1000
20 mm aggregate = 0.704*34%*2.73*1000 = 653.453 = 653 kg/m3

h. Mass of coarse aggregate = Vol. of all in Agg*% of CA*S.G of 10 mm Coarse Aggregate*1000

10 mm aggregate = 0.704*21.0%*2.70*1000 = 399.168 = 399 kg/m3

i. Mass of Fine Aggregate = Vol. of all in agg.* % of FA * S.G of Fine Aggregate * 1000
= 0.704*45%*2.68*1000 = 849.024 = 849 kg/m3
8 Mix design Calculation :-
Hence required quantity per m3 as given below :-
S.S.D
OPC Cement = 140 kg/m3
GGBS = 230 kg/m3
Water = 159 kg/m3
10 mm = 399 kg/m3
20 mm = 653 kg/m3
Cr.Sand = 849 kg/m3
Admixture = 4.26 kg/m3
2435

Note :-
1. All the values for aggregates are for SSD conditions.
2. Adjustments to aggregate & water content shall be done based on the free moisture content in the aggregates.
3. Properties of materials may vary, conforming to specifications as per IS 4926.
