Importance of VGA in Computers

VGA, or Video Graphics Adapter, is necessary computer hardware that allows a computer to display images on a monitor. Without a VGA, a computer cannot output images and a monitor cannot display anything. The main functions of a VGA card are to generate and output images. There are different types of VGA cards available depending on factors like monitor connections, graphics processing unit, memory, and brands. Users should choose a VGA based on their needs, like using an on-board VGA for basic tasks but a higher-end PCI-Express VGA for professional graphics work.

ENGLISH PAPER Computer Hardware THE NECESSITY AND THE FUCTION OF VGA

Surya Udayana INFORMATION SYSTEM STMIK STIKOM BALI 2011

ABSTRACT
What is VGA? Video Graphic Adapter, or shortly called VGA. Its a part of computer hadware which is really required for it. Just like a computer without display. And a display without VGA is useless. So why is it really required? Can we build a computer without VGA? Isnt it spend less money without istalling this VGA? So, this questions always arised from a newbie user. Or a business man who need a computer without earning much money. In this paper, I deliberately discuss about the necessity and its functions. This discussion is very important for those who is new in computer world, especially in computer hardware.

I. INTRODUCTION
In education world, we can see how usefull the computer is. Computer help us so much. Either we are student, teacher, business man, or whatever it may be. There are so many categories of computer users that I cant mention on by one I, as a studet, want to clarify about the needs of VGA, and its fuction. Secondly I personally want to share my own research on this computer hardware. And I have been applicated it some kinds of VGA on my own PC (Personal Computer). I also want to add some explanations avout the types of VGA according to the user needs. The technology progress fastly, so is in computer technology. Especially this VGA has nonstop improvements and innovations in both of its quality and shape. There are two wellknown VGA providers. Nvidia and ATI. They are the largest VGA providers in the world. This VGA always used by a professional multimedia developer. And also its widely used by a PCGamer. Some people are really interested in PC-Gaming. So they spend a lot of money for that, for one high quality VGA. We see on the Television there are many cartoon movies, from two dimentions cartoon until four dimensions cartoon movies. And the animator od these cartoon movies surely use a very high specification of PC, mainly the VGA.

II. RELATED WORK A. The Function of VGA As a Graphic chard, VGA supports the display. Without this VGA, its impossible to display any output from the computer. VGA Card function is to generate and output images to a display on the monitor. Now a days all motherboards have in-built VGA card. If it fails you have to add one VGA card on your mother board. VGA card it stands for video Graphic Aray with our VGA card any monitor or lcd will not display any thing mostly computers and have built in cards but if it stop working you can add new in other slot. But The main functions of VGA card is for image render, and make good or best quality for our image, game, and video. B. Types of VGA VGA cards, or graphics cards more commonly these days, have come a long way since first appearing in the mainstream in the 1980's. Almost all commercially-available graphics cards are for PC and Mac, and have several distinguishing features consumers should be aware of. The name "VGA card" is anachronistic. VGA, or Video Graphics Array, is an old standard referring to a resolution of 640X480. Of course, contemporary cards support much higher resolutions. The name VGA stuck, remaining in reference to the video standard that was common when modern graphics cards first appeared. It also means one of the common connectortypes that computers and monitors support. So the types of VGA can be divided according to : 1. Monitor connections While graphics cards connect to the motherboard on one end, they output to a monitor on the other. Therefore, several video connectors are important to note. The oldest and most common is VGA, typically colored blue. In the early 2000's, DVI-D entered the market; it's a white rectangle. In the late 2000's, HDMI gained in popularity. Many graphics cards also have a TV-out connector that can directly transmit television. The best cards have more than two connectors available. Typical configurations include one VGA and two DVI-D's, or VGA, DVI-D and HDMI plus TV-out.

2. Graphics processing unit Graphics cards are measured by their pixel-pushing and graphics-generating capabilities. This is mostly done by the graphics processing unit, or GPU. Currently, the two main brands in the market are NVIDIA and ATI AMD. These two companies produce a variety of GPU's for desktops, from basic to hardcore gaming applications. GPUs are rated on several performance factors: floating operations per second (FLOPS), texture and pixel fill rates, core clock speed and number of pipelines or shader processors. The higher the numbers for each of these, the better performance the card has. 3. Memory The next important component is memory. The more memory the card has, the easier it is for it to handle workloads. Gaming requires the most performance out of a graphics card, and so the models is geared towards this application have the most RAM. Memory clock speed is a huge factor for gamers. The higher the speed the better, and the higher grade the RAM itself, better still. Look for memory called GDDR, which is supposedly RAM optimized for graphics. GDDR typically has a number following it. For example, GDD3. This means the memory can triple the given memory clock speed. Therefore, a GDDR5 setup running at 1Ghz is actually working at 4Ghz. 4. Brands Both NVIDIA and ATI AMD design GPU's and license them to vendors, mostly from Taiwan and China. The NVIDIA cards are known as GeForce, while ATI AMD markets GPU's under the Radeon HD brand. Popular vendors that actually make graphics cards include Sapphire (mostly Radeon HD products), EVGA, MSI, XFX, PNY, BFG Tech and ASUS.

III. EXPERIMENT This is my own experiment of my own PC. I use two types of VGA. One is on-board VGA. Another one is PCI-Express VGA.

This is the performance of the PCI-Express VGA. Its very good quality.

This is the performance of on-board VGA. We can se it is low quality.

IV. DISSCUSSION

[On-Board VGA]

[PIC-Express VGA] Many people asked. Which VGA they should choose. I will clarify this very carefully. First we have to know who is the user. Secondly, what kind of job he has. Means that in what level that person is. He may be a professional animator, game developer or others. And how much performance he needs from the VGA. So, its not necessary to buy the best or the most expensive VGA in the world. But we have to choose according our needs. If we just use the computer for typing, listening the music, or any other things which is not required high quality graphic from the VGA, then we can just use the on-board VGA which is already included in the Motherboard. No need to earn a lot of money. But what about professional designer? Professional animator? For them theres no question of low quality of VGA. What to speak about build-in or on-board VGA. They will spend much money to apply this sophicticated VGA. Which will give them the best result of quality.

V. CONCLUSION So many types of VGA, that we have discussed before. I hope no confusion remains in your mind. So I conclude my explanation, that when the time of choosing VGA, we have to know our needs. Evethough this can be done by others, but if you want your Desired Computer, you should choose by your own. Then you would not be cheated. Nowdays there are so many persons who cheated the ignorant persons. VI. RESOURCES
