Instrumentation Project Description 2023

This document outlines an instrumentation project for students to develop an instrumentation system for system monitoring and data logging. The objectives are to design, develop, and calibrate the instrumentation system and investigate its accuracy. Students will work individually to select different sensors, designs, materials, and calibration methods. The report requirements include chapters on the project background, mechanical design, electrical design, sensor calibration, accuracy testing, and conclusion. Students will also present their project in a 3-5 minute presentation covering the background, design, functionality, and hardware includes jumper wires, breadboards, batteries, resistors, operational amplifiers, Arduinos, SD cards, and multimeters. Software includes the Arduino IDE and Tinkercad.

INSTRUMENTATION (SEMM3242) PROJECT (40%)

FACULTY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA

SEM 2023/2024-1

Title:
Development of Instrumentation System for System Monitoring and Data Logging.

Objective:
1. To design and develop and instrumentation for system monitoring and data logging.
2. To calibrate the proposed instrumentation system.
3. To investigate the accuracy of the developed instrumentation system.

Project Rules & Regulation:

This is an individual project and everyone should submit his/her own project report, and the report
should not contain any plagiarism. Please take note that individual project outcomes need to be
different from the others in the following perspectives:
 Instrumentation system selection and design.
 Material selection and fabrication.
 Sensor calibration charts and graphs.
 Instrumentation system accuracy.

However, student is encouraged to work in group for information sharing and project discussion.

Assessment:
1. Report – 30%
Every student needs to submit the project report at the end of semester. The report should
consist of:
 Chapter 1 (3%) – Project Background: introduction, objective, scopes, review on most
recent technologies used in the selected instrumentation system.
 Chapter 2 (5%) – Mechanical Design: overall system description (block diagram), physical
design of enclosure, engineering drawing with proper enclosure dimensioning, material
selection and fabrication techniques used to produce the enclosure.
 Chapter 3 (10%) – Electrical Design: sensor selection, signal conditioning system design
(sample calculation, schematic diagram, circuit drawing), components selection and
remote monitoring system setup.
 Chapter 4 (5%) – Sensor calibration procedures and results (calibration charts / graphs).
 Chapter 5 (5%) – Instrumentation system accuracy testing procedures and results
(accuracy charts / graphs), analysis and discussion of instrumentation system accuracy.
 Chapter 6 (2%) – Conclusion.
2. Presentation (In Class / Video) – 10%
In 3 – 5 minutes, each student should present the following information clearly:
 Project background
 Instrumentation system design and how it works.
 Functionality demonstration of the instrumentation system.

LIST OF HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE FOR THE PROJECT

Hardware:
 Jumper wires.
 Breadboard 830 holes points.
 AAA Batteries + battery holder (x2)
 Resistors (depends on design)
 Operational Amplifier (741)
 Arduino UNO / NANO
