Canadian Geography

Subject: Social 5

Rationale: This unit students will be learning all about Canadian Geography. Students will learn about regions
specifically while also diving deeper into general topics such as climate, natural resources, maps and
landforms.

This unit will focus on teaching through narration of travels through Canada. Students will learn about
regions in a structured self directed research manner as we move from region to region. Students will
be researching each region based off of a structure that I will provide. We will go through the first
region together and show the students how to research based off of links and information provided.
Students will then be putting this information in their research booklet.

All the information gathered within the journal will work towards a unit project as well as instilling skills
in: researching, critical thinking, summarizing data, analyzing fact vs. opinion.

By the end of the unit students will know the different geographical areas of Canada as well as the
different resources and industries found in them. Furthermore, students will explore and appreciate
unique qualities of Canada such as parks, indigenous groups and their connection to the land. In
addition to knowledge and understanding about Canada specifically students will learn map and
research skills.

This unit is also flexible in the order in which it is taught, we will be going through the different regions
and supplementing that by diving deeper into topics such as natural resources, FNMI communities
and natural disasters in Canada. Main lessons will be focused on the full 1 hour classes. The smaller
30 minute classes on Friday will be used for: review, catching up on material if we are behind, flex
lessons that will be fit in when appropriate and working on the unit project once we have started into
the regions.

Due to the nature of this unit being semi structured self directed research there is a high degree of
UDL within the format as each student can research to the students abilities. When needed additional
support will be provided in order to assist student learning.
Methods Instruction for this unit will use a mix of direct instruction and class discussion based approaches when
teaching about new topics. However the focus of this unit will incorporate an inquiry based approach
as students look to research the different regions. This will first be done as a group in order to help
show students how to research and gradually be more student led in how they find the information.

Approx. Sept, 25 – Dec. 22

Dates 13 weeks -
~ 25 Classes + 10 half Classes

There will be missed classes for Parent Teacher Interviews, Remembrance day and Christmas wrap
up.

Full classes will be used for larger topics. Half classes will be used for smaller topics as well as project
work time later in the unit.

Assessment For specifics on assessments please see the assessment plan.

Formative assessments will be done through: in class discussion, worksheets done in class, recording
their information of the different regions, games, group activities, exit slips, regular thumbs up
assessment or fist to five.

Summative will be done using regular: quizzes and projects going over topics we have gone over as a
class will be the main form of summative assessments for Social.

If we are not in need of the flex days these

will be used as Christmas themed social
classes.

We will explore and share different ways

throughout the country. Students can share their
34 - 35 traditions while also looking at others present in
FLEX Canada’s multicultural demographics.
