Lesson 1: THE SITE OF THE FIRST MASS
Activity
Form yourselves into groups and discuss whether the so-called Antique House of PUP
was indeed the mansion of Don Francisco Carriedo y Peredo, a philanthropist who
came from Spain and built a waterworks system beginning from the El Deposito in San
Juan from 1878 to 1882.
What are the arguments that back up and negate the Antique House of PUP as the
former Carriedo Mansion?
An antique two-story building known as Antique House is located on the Polytechnic
University of the Philippines (PUP) campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
The architectural style of the Antique House is influenced by Spanish colonial
architecture. The edifice is from the prewar era and is thought to be one of the
Carriedo family's houses.
The Carriedo Mansion was previously the residence of Don Francisco Carriedo y'
Peredo, who served as Manila's Gobernadorcillo at the time and was also the
driving force behind the city's clean water system. The antique mansion inside
the site of the Institute of Technology Polytechnic University of the Philippines
was, in fact, the Carriedo Mansion, which belonged to Don Francisco Carriedo y'
Peredo who served as the Gobernadorcillo of Manila
However, the National Development Company, or NDC, decided to donate its properties
to the government in 1989, this mansion came under the care of PUP-Manila. The
former PUP College of Technology occupied the mansion's first floor. But later, it
appears that this Antique House is in an advanced state of dilapidation because of its
alleged old age, as stated in the PUP's 2010 report to the Commission on Audit. Sadly,
it appears that those in charge are no longer maintaining it. Today, it is no longer in use
and has been fenced off for the safety of those staying inside PUP ITech.
Out of the arguments presented, do you think that the said establishment was
indeed the Carriedo Mansion?
Yes, because this mansion was once lived by Don Francisco Carriedo y Peredo (1690-
1743), a philanthropist from Spain who was also the Governor-General of Manila. He
was known and admired in his generation because of his supervision of the construction
of the first irrigation system in the whole of Manila in the 18th century. This mansion
came under the care of PUP-Manila after the National Development Company or NDC
gave its properties to the government in 1989. The first floor of the mansion was used
by the former PUP College of Technology.
