1.0 COURSE DESCRIPTION

Calculus is a main component in learning mathematics. This subject covers the additional algebraic
and trigonometric skills needed by the students before they venture into the world of calculus. It
consists of four major parts: coordinates, graphs and lines; functions; systems of equations and
inequalities; and trigonometry.

2.0 Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
• State the basic concepts of real numbers, complex numbers, absolute value, coordinate
plane and graphs, and functions. (C2, P2)
• Use the basic concepts of real numbers, complex numbers, absolute value and functions.
(C2, A1)
• Solve exponential and logarithmic equations, linear and non-linear equations and
trigonometric equations. (C4, P3, A3)
• Sketch the graphs of the basic functions. (C3, P3, A1)

3.0 TEACHING METHODOLOGY

A combination of the following methods:
Lectures : 3 hours/week, Tutorial/lab : 1 hour/week

4.0 ASSESSMENT
Final examination – One 3-hours paper : 60%
Course Work : 40%
Test 1 : 10%
Test 2 : 10%
Test 3 : 10%
Quizzes (2) : 6%
Lab Assignment : 4%
